Use new TP42 restore CDs on older TP42?
I just got my a new ThinkPad T42 and I'm about to start preparing my old one for resale. I'd like to sell it with its software in factory condition, and obviously a new buyer would prefer to have the most up-to-date software, so here's my question:
Can I use the restore CDs that I just made from my new system to restore the older system? The new system has a fingerprint reader; the old one doesn't. But they both have ATI 7500 graphics and otherwise seem similar.
Any advice on this will be gratefully received.

Yes Professor, they'll work just fine on the "older" system. But doesn't your "old" system still have the Recovery Partition? Or did you nuke it?
Run the software installer afterwards to make sure all of the latest drivers are loaded.

James

Excellent - thank you, James! I think I'll remind the purchaser (whoever it may be) to run the installer, so that I don't impose a system name, etc., on the machine. The purchaser will (I hope) appreciate a machine that starts up entirely as his or her own...
The older system still does have the recovery partition (and a set of seven CDs that I made the day the machine arrived), but (if I remember correctly) the older system was pre-SP2, and that's a lot of downloading that can be avoided by restoring the newer system.

Put the HD from your old system in the Ultrabay of your new one and FORMAT it.
Then put it back in the old system and run the recovery CDs.
Precludes any possibility of the old HD forcing a "repair" install on the old machine in error.

James
