T40 Recovery CD set not free???
T40 Recovery CD set not free???
I read a previous posting from a fellow Australian regarding obtaining Recovery CD sets.
It seems that you guys in America have it lucky and IBM America actually provide you these sets quite liberally and for free!
It seems that we have no such luck here in Australia and they expect us to pay AUD$82.50.
I was wondering is there anywhere that ISO images of these disks can be downloaded off the Internet?
I know there are ways in which I can create a recovery set however owning a T40 the Access IBM software does not allow for it. Also reading the IBM HPA whitepaper doesn't really clearly define on how to correctly image the drive.

Well Grantus, if I had a set of recovery CD's I would be more than happy to send a copy over to you, or even create an ISO and allow you to download it. I wanted to request the recovery CD's however I read on the board that you can only do it within a 30day time period - in which case my time has long since expired.
I would have thought that as I am an employee of IBM they would have been a little more inclined to bend the rules but obviously it's not the case!
Heheheh oh well... anyone else out there with a spare set of T40 recovery CDs that they no longer need??? Seems like most of the people frequenting this forum are avid Thinkpad fans and have all upgraded to the newer T42's I'm sure at least 1 of you have a set lying around that you no longer need

G'day Grantus,
As you work for IBM you might have better luck with this plan than the average Aussie.
Call your OZ IBM support number and tell them you're installing a larger HD in your T40 and need the recovery CDs in order to reinstall XPP.
If they ask for any money, tell them you've already paid for an XP license when you purchased the T40 and the CDs themselves cost only pennies each.
Don't take "No" as an answer, and escalate the issue to the supervisor level. You folks down under have much better consumer protection laws than we here in the US, perhaps there is something in the law you could use to put IBM's feet to the fire?
AUD$ 82.50 for a few CDs seems extortionate.
Regards,
James

If you work for IBM maybe they have some server hosting them on the IBM network. Have you thought about trying to find them internally?
If that doesn't work maybe you could have them shipped to someone in USA for cheaper (or free) and have them either ship them to you or host the .iso online. I don't know if they would have to call in or not, but I for one would be willing or I bet lots of others might.

Hi thanks for the replies guys,
James... yes i've tried the "changing the HDD" tactic with support... and they didn't buy it, but that is essentially why i want the recovery disks. Still stuck firm with the 82.50, but i agree with you when u say that since i bought the laptop, i did essentially pay for the XP licence. Maybe i should try again...?
boardmonger, yep tried looking internally, but no luck there either.
I think it would be nice to have a recovery disk repository somewhere, i think it would be very handy.

Grantus,
Escalate your call to a supervisor, don't accept no as an answer, stic to your guns. Worst case scenario, tell them your present HD is dead!
Refer them to US support not having a problem with sending recovery CDs for free or for minimal cost.
Become a pest! You're not asking them to do anything illegal, you're just fighting against the inertia of their never having done it in the past.
