"System Update" vs "Software Installer"

#1 Post by JHaislet » Sun May 21, 2006 6:48 pm

Having some trouble downloading the latest drivers using the Software Installer application (SATA driver & Keyboard Customizer), I went to the Thinkpad Matrix and saw a new application called "System Update".

What is this? Is it the "new" Software Installer program? It seems like Software Installer is unable to update anything else as the downloads never finish. If this is indeed the case, it sure would have been nice for Lenovo to allow the download & install of "System Update" thru Software Installer. This would have saved a couple hours of frustration while trying to get the two latest drivers.

Just search for system update, download the tool and install it. Seems to work. I uninstalled software installer first, and recommend everyone do the same. ... JD Hurst

Seems the system update is a replacement of software installer:

Yup... seems the big difference is system update is supposed to keep you up to date, from the sound of it, it will operate more like windows update and automatically download for you (background process).

Also sounds like it's transitioning, so software installer may go away (at least that's my interpretation of the docs online).

Anyone else find system update has some connection issues?

Yeah - I was just about to ask myself. Can't get beyond the "cannot connect to package content server"...

Whatever Software Update 2 uses for its functional connectivity mechanism, it is different from Software Installer's functional connectivity mechanism

I cannot get Software Update 2 to connect when my T43 is attached to our corporate WAN (which has industrial strength firewalls) but it works fine on my home Internet connection (through a NAT router). Software Installer works fine in on both networks.

There is something in the help file for Software Update 2 about entering proxy settings which is clearly realated to the corporate WAN issues, however it seems like I'd need to turn that setting on and off as I changed networks, which seems like a big nusiance, so I haven't fully investigated it as yet.

Cheers,

Bill

Follow up on System updater. I think my suspicions have been confirmed. It is nothing more than a cosmetic update of Update Connector (which was a very poor program). There are a pile of new updates out for the "T" series starting in mid-May 2006. The new updater found one out of six. Worse, when I downloaded and exploded them into the proper driver folder, Updater could not find them. Installer handled this quite well.

System Updater 2 is just going backward. I am mightily unimpressed. ... JD Hurst

Edit: Yup - System Updater 2 is a goner. It did not recognize the updates I had done and is telling me to re-do them. Now it is telling me my BIOS is out of date which it is not. This was one of the very same issues with Update Connector - it didn't know which way was up. Updater 2 is doing the same thing. Back to manual for me.

Software Installer has been great for me.

SU is bombing (can't connect).

I hope that's not the way of the future.

I go to:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... country=us
key in my machine type, download updates, explode them into c:\drivers\winxpp\"drivername" and run set up from there. I delete any prior folders in winxpp before exploding any given update. Then I have a nice neat list in c:\drivers that is everything currently installed. Been doing that for years now, and neat habits (once engrained) are hard to break. ... JD Hurst
