Canadians get screwed by IBM (help please)

#1 Post by daveycrockett » Wed Aug 04, 2004 3:16 pm

Sigh, My dream machine is the T42 2378UU (1.5 14", XGA, 256mb, 40gb, b/g, cdrw/dvd). Unfortunately, such a system is not available in Canada, only in the U.S. The closest I can get to that system is a system with a 30gb hard drive (same specs otherwise). Does anyone know a way that Canadians can get a T42 1.5 14" XGA 40gb cdrw/dvd without paying $450 extra just to get 10gb and 5400 rpm(Thats what the [censored] at IBM Canada quoted me to go from a 3ogb to a 40gb).

Send an email to Bill. IBM Canada also gave me insane prices to upgrade the hard drive. Go to his website http://www.thinkpads.com/start.htm. There is a similar T42, only better specs, on the bottom of the page.

Good luck

I assume you mean 2378DUU?

Order it directly from Bill. You're timing is good -- the CAD went up over a penny yesterday.

That model has international warranty so you can upgrade from 1 yr. to as many as 5, according to Mr. Morrow. He can even get you TPad Protection coverage that's valid in Canada, if you ask.

Sadly I can do nothing to help you - but the title of the post caught my eye - are you really asking for help for IBM to screw Canadians? If this is the case then I'm certainly not going to help - I have a friend who was able, in a blind test, to spell Canada correctly 7 times out of 10 so don't count on us to help...

PS. I didn't get a gold case, but I did get a yellow feather - worth much more in my book...

That is TWO AND A HALF GRAND MORE!!!! What the f**k? Are they sending them in gold cases or something???
That's kinda like the T41p 2373GEU

Canada Web Price: $5,529CAD
US Web Price: $2,635USD = $3,531CAD

I was cold-calling engineering and architecture firms b/c I figured this model would be perfect for their 3D modeling app.'s. When I told them how much I could save them, a few accused me of selling stolen laptops! Sooner or later, these folks will wake up and IBM Canada will have some 'splainin to do!

I concur -- WTF?

I think IBM Canada is quickly becoming irrelevant, at least in the PC Market. It is an old, monolithic business model based on exclusivity that is being bombarded by reality of modern business -- I think this concept is spelled 'I', 'n', 't', 'e', 'r', 'n', 'e', 't'

Yep, the 2738DUU is the model I meant. Does Bill take credit card? I'm not sure I like the idea of wiring cash to a person I dont know in another country. IBM Canada prices their laptops as if the exchange rate was still .65

Daveycrockett,

Having bought from Bill I can tell you he's legit and I trust him. Not sure
if that'll help you decide what to do, but I'm sure many other people on
this board feel the same way.

Good luck in your purchase.

Kludgey.

davey,

I bought from bill--everything was on the up and up. I got the 3UU and saved a bundle. Happily computing in Calgary,

Paul
