Remap Insert key to Fn?

#1 Post by mavis » Wed May 24, 2006 9:11 am

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone knew how to remap a key to serve as a second "Fn" key ... ?

I never use the "Insert" key, and since it's right next to the Home and End keys (brightness) which I use all the time, it would be great if I could make the Insert key function as a "Fn" key. My hands aren't quite big enough to make brightness adjustments a one-handed operation with the Fn key where it is now ... :(

Any ideas?

Ahhh, the Fn key; probably the only key that can't be re-mapped easily I'm afraid, especially for the functions that you have in mind (Brightness control)

The Fn key as some extra hardware wired into it; hence, it can do some special things like bring the Thinkpad out of suspend mode and all of the Fn key combos are tied into the BIOS, especially the brightness as it works no matter what else you have running as an OS or whatnot.

It might be possible, however, to set up somthing that is a software based key-trigger that runs in the background in Windows or is a modification to the registry that lets you have another key combo (e.g. Insert+Home/End) at your disposal to control the screen brightness through Windows. I know, a tad bit of a convoluted path, but it might work.

HTH :)

She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Poor, neglected INS key ... no one cares for it any more. I'm sure .05% of the population know how to copy and paste to the Windows clipboard with it.
