Windows Vista beta on T42p
Windows Vista beta on T42p
I understand that the recovery partition is hidden from Windows XP and can't be easily deleted without using 3rd party software. What about Vista? If I do a clean install (i.e. boot with Vista CD, delete the main partition, and create a fresh NTFS partition) of Windows Vista beta 2, will I later be able to restore Windows XP using the recovery partition?

Short answer: No. From what I have read on this forum, those that install a fresh copy of Windows end up messing up the MBR for the Recovery Partition. There is a floppy disk program available that is supposed to fix the MBR so the recovery partition can boot again.
That said, "I think" you could boot up using a Rescue Media CD and restore Windows XP from the recovery partition, but I am not absolutely certain this would work. (don't confuse Rescue Media with Recovery Media)
You should have no problem using the Product Recovery Disc set to restore your factory software. Warning: using these discs erases all existing data on your hard drive. You can burn a set of these yourself. Go to either Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Create Recovery Discs OR Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage > Create Recovery Media. Once you launch that, you will see the option to create the Rescue Media and the Product Recovery Discs.

Thanks for the info. I guess laptop hard drives are cheap enough that I'll just buy a second drive to play around with Vista so I won't risk messing up the original drive's recovery partition.

Any bumps? Or something that you miss from the old XP?
