Another new HDD Issue (100Gb Seagate) - 'a disk read error'

Hey guys,

I've searched high and low trying to find an answer to my bizarre situation here and all over the place.

- I've got a T41.
- I've upgraded the OEM 40Gb disk to a 100Gb Seagate 5400.2 UATA.
- I can see the drive listed in the BIOS OK
- I've tried to Acronis the Hidden Part, but simply 'Disabling' it reveals empty space (no part'n) and I can't see it if I leave it 'Normal'? ?odd?
- I've cloned the 2 part'ns I had on the 40Gb to the 100Gb.
- The 100Gb drive boots fine in a DELL laptop I have (OS copy OK, MBR OK, Active part'n OK)

But when I stick the disk in the T41, the machine POSTs fine, starts to boot the OS and I get:

A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart

I'm guessing it's a disk geometry issue but can't find a TP Low level formatter to use

Can anyone help me with a solution or a tool here that can allow me to get this drive up and fine as my boot drive?

I'm guessing a low level format will set it up for the IBM disk controlelr to read fine, then I'll do the partn' copy _AGAIN_.

My next woe is how to get the dreaded hidden parition over and working again.

I believe the answer is to put the hard drive in the main slot of your ThinkPad, then delete all the partitions on it. Next use the Product Recovery Disc set or else a Windows install CD to reinstall the Operating System.

Like you say, this is probably a disk geometry issue.

Cheers GomJabbar, i'll give it a go. As I said, it was placed into different hardware to clone it (over USB of all things) so I'll hack up the p'n table in the T41 and then clone p'n to p'n rather than disk to disk.

How do you clone your hard disk ? If you do it within an other computer, it may not work. This seems to be the case.
I think it's a better way to reinstall Windows with your onw copy and after all the Thinkpad driver or to use IBM recovery CD. Use your old hard disk like an external drive for exemple with USB icybox.

I upgrade my T41p from 7K60 to Momentus 7200.1 100 Go, no problem using this way.

I'm using my own image to apply to the TP41 (that's the build on it at the moment) and it worked fine. But it was layed down from my custom boot DVD onto the internal HDD.

It may just be easier for me to lay down a new image onto the new hdd and migrate my profile and data drive across........ in hindsight

why isnt Lenovo simply fixing this drive geometry issue? Problems over and over - Lenovo seems to handle harddisks here very differently compared to other manufacturers. Why is it?
