Thinkpad boot with emm386

#1 Post by pdudas » Mon May 29, 2006 7:12 am

Hi!

I want to use Hiren's bootcd on my pendrive. It is working now but some applications wants to use emm386.
Do you have any idea what settings is suitable for thinkpads?

It freezes whenever I want to load emm386. Instant freeze.

Do you have any type of boot floppy, boot cd, or any other media using emm386 on thinkpads?

How can I get the options I have to use at boot time with emm386?

Thanks in advance!

If I'm not mistaken, emm386 is a DOS memory manager (or perhaps a Windows 3.x memory manager that works with DOS). I believe you will need to boot DOS to have emm386 work, or be available.

The following MS-DOS commands are not available at the command prompt.

emm386 Function is now inherent.
That said, I am not familiar with Hiren's bootcd.

If I remember correctly, emm386.sys is an expanded memory manager. As such, it requires an extended memory manager to load first. Himem.sys is the extended memory manager. I used to know all this stuff, but I'm a bit rusty on it now.

I found the following in Windows Help and Support:
Before you can load a device driver into the upper memory area, you must use device to install the Himem.sys device driver. Device must appear before any devicehigh command in your Config.nt or equivalent startup file.

device=c:\winnt\system32\himem.sys

I have the himem.sys loaded before the emm386.

Sorry, my DOS is too rusty, and I don't have any documentation at my present location. Hopefully someone else can help you further.

I dont see why the emm386 not working. There is information in the bios flash readme where the usable memory setting written. I set them in config sys, but not working.

I have a very good tool (Hiren's Boot CD 8.1) on my pendrive, but some of the programs not working because of emm386.
