How do you clean the lid of a thinkpad?

#1 Post by akerman » Tue May 30, 2006 1:18 am

I am thinking of selling my t41p,and want to make it as shiny new as possible :-)

The lid has a lot of shallow scratches/marks, that probably wouldn't show on a regular notebook, but they're showing clearly here because of the soft material.

Is there anyway to remove those scratches, barring using a sander or something like that? =)

A couple of good tips within the following thread:

Even using your thumb or a soft fabric cloth would probably be alright - I haven't really worried much about the scuff marks on my T40.

And I reckon that putting a ThinkPad anywhere near a sander would be sacrilege ;)

I either extend my KlearScreen Cleaner and Micro-Chamois cloth to the lid or just use a tissue that is damp with alcohol, sometimes both. Gets rid of grease smears and what not. :)

I have used windex without any problems. There is probably something better like soap and water but the windex was there at the time.

I've found that Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work great to clean the lid on my T41.

I used a damp cotton cloth last weekend on a 2 year old T41, worked superbly. If it's really *dirty* you might use a thin solution of gentle soap (Ivory, Dr. Bronner's, glycerin) to dampen the cloth.

Not WET, mind you, but DAMP.

I wouldn't worry about the minute scratches and scuffs. My T41 has 'em. It's used, for pete's sake. Used means used. Only weenuses gripe that a used laptop has some light wear and tear on the xterior. Now the display ... for that, use a good light LCD screen cleaning fluid (NOT Windex or other glass cleaners!) and lint-free cloth.
