What driver do i need for Ultrabay

#1 Post by jedge04 » Fri Jun 02, 2006 8:06 am

my CD-r broke so i called up IBM and they sent me a new one. Of course i didnt spend a second on hold and they were able to get me the part in less than 24 hours. I put the baby in and my computer will detect it but i am pretty sure it needs a driver before the computer will know how to use it. I looked on ibm.com but cant seem to find the correct drive so hopefully someone can help me out.

I also got a new keyboard because i had accidentally pulled of my H key. I got this computer two summers ago from Bill so i assume my keyboard was manufacturer around that time. The new keyboard, though, is much less satisfying than the last. Less feel and play within each key and it is kind of annoying, but im sure i just have to get use to it.

If you're running Windows 2000 or XP, you won't need any new drivers.

You don't say which model TP you're using (full seven-character code needed), or whether it uses a keyboard that connects with three or four screws, so we can't really help. There are lots of people here with spare keyboards that they would like to get rid of (I've got one that I'll offer for sale before too long), but we can't suggest one until we know exactly what kind of keyboard you already have

The drive is blinking repeatedly and wont open.

In My Computer it does recognize me having a D drive if that helps

I'm afraid I'll have to let someone more expert than I am try to figure out what's wrong. I assume that you've powered off the machine and then powered it back on again with the drive in the slot?

Also, could you say whether you have a T40, T41, T42, T43 or some other model (T42p, etc.), and whether it has a 14.1 or 15-inch screen. That way, we won't have to spend time looking it up.

Try going into Device Manager, then right-click on the CD/DVD drive and uninstall it. Reboot. Now see if it works correctly.

You can test if it is a drive problem by putting a bootable CD such as a Windows install CD, Norton AV CD, or DR-DOS bootable CD in, then reboot the machine. Press button when prompted to boot from the CD. If it boots up fine, your drive should be OK. In this case I believe you have a Windows registry entry problem.

OP, I presume you got a same-type replacement, so no "new drivers" ought to be needed. But running Software Installer and checking for driver/utilities updates isn't a bad idea.

For troubleshootin, try right-clicking the CD in Explorer/My Computer and select Eject. You might also right-click and select Properties, -> Hardware tab. Does it report the device is working properly?

There's a whole, very long thread on the merits of NMB vs. Chicony vs. ALPS keyboards on T40s. If you have a couple of hours, take a look at the thread. ;) I'd love to get a hold of a Thai-made NMB kybd. Twice someone has offered to send me one, then welched. Have Paypal at the ready for a real offer.

I have a Chicony which is "okay," but after playing with a older T40 NMB with tell-tale blue bumpers, I'm a believer. There is a very slight difference (IMHO, for the casual user), but noticeable if you're a fast touch typist (I am).

Thanks, but can't use it. I'd ebaY it, or offer it here. Nothing like turning old materiel into $ and then into a new mouse or dinner out or long-desired DVD. 8)
