Successful Momentus 160GB in T42 as Primary drive

#1 Post by Yeastman » Fri Jun 02, 2006 3:18 pm

Just a note for those of you with T42's who are thinking about the Momentus 160gb for use as an Internal primary drive. In my T42 model 2378-DWU, the installation went without a hitch, the bios recognized it correctly, and was able to see all 160gb of the size. I had wondered if i'd see the 137gb limitation might pop up but fortunately it did not.

The only other thing to remember is that although the bios recognized it correctly, Windows XP won't recongnize anything past 137gb without installing service pack 2 (there is a registry edit to do this for SP1 if so inclined tho - google for it). After sp2 and the assorted updates, XP was able to see all 160gb.

For a 5400rpm drive it performs quite nicely; it seems like it's a faster access speed than the factory 40gb drive.

Hope this is useful to somebody!

40 GB to 160 ... that must've been a joyful sight!

The 160GB Seagate works perfectly as the primary in my T41.

Bah!... perhaps I should have got that instead of a second 100GB hitachi. Got two of the 100gb 7200rpm-ers (one in the belly the other in the ultrabay). Ah well.

Hitachi will come out with their own 160GB drive pretty soon as well. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.
