Sounds like you are using DFRG.MSC. Most likely, a few system files aren't defragged (pagefile, hibernation file). I sometimes turn off hibernation support to blitz that file before a seasonal defrag.

The command line utility (new to XP) defrag [drive] -f will force a defrag. -b switch is an undocumented method, I read that it puts frequently accessed "programs" at the outside.

Some files can't be defragged while booted up. Check sysinternals.com for PageDFRG, a free utility that can defrag the pagefile(s), and registry files. Also, he has a Contig utility that can defrag specific files, specific folders, or specific file types across a drive. The pages for these downloads provide some solid info on WHY certain files aren't normally defragmented.

I run a defrag script weekly which uses contig, then defrag, then sets up a one-time PageDfrg on next reboot. Drive cleanliness is close to....

I have used Windows defrag, Diskkeeper defrag and Perfect Disk. None of them defrag completely and there is nothing to worry about. Perfect Disk is the best of the lot because it can run silently while you work. So long as you exclude the pagefile and things like huge Virtual machines, you won't even notice it running. I run mine daily at noon (my laptop is off overnight). and overal fragmentation is very low. ... JD Hurst
