Hot undock and automatic changing resolution 1600 to 1024?

Is there a way to hot undock my computer and have it AUTOMATICALLY change between the external monitor's resolution and the laptop's own display's resolution? And vice versa? I have a 1024 laptop resolution and a 1600 monitor resolution.

I have a T42 2378etu. I am using the port replicator. I also cannot get the function, but is it because my analog port is plugged in too?

I'd like to be able to do this too... so far the nearest I've got it so put the ATI icon for the video card (ATI Mobility Radeon 9600) in the systray so I can change resolutions with one mouse click... but it would be really good for the machine to do this for me. What's P Director?
