T43p electrocuted me, cracks pops and squeaks!

#1 Post by easily_rechargable » Tue Jun 06, 2006 9:41 am

Hi thinkpad fans,

I bought my T43p last february directly from IBM/Lenovo.
I took it out of the box and didn't find anything wrong with it.
It opend and closed not too easily, but I figured that was just the hinges that needed some wearing in.

After a while it came to my attention that when I only used 1 hand to close the screen (hand in the middle), it wouldn't lock both locks... only the right one would fully lock in, for the left one I needed to add pressure to the left hand side of the screen.

This problem takes me to the folowing. On the back there's a lil bezel over the flatcable that goes from the screen to the base part of the TP, and it's only covering about 50% of the space, so you can take a pen and poke/pull the flatcable. Apart from that "minor" setback the antenna on top of my screen is indented, and in my honest oppinion, this doesn't seem right (the 2nd antennae on the right hand side doesn't have this).

As if that wasn't enough "fun", I have been repeatedly shocked by boath the cooling rims (left hand side of the laptop) and the fingerprint reader. I thought it was a really powerfull static discharge, but after checking with lenovo it seemed that that it was a peak wich caused the shock... Funny thing is that the system still works good, even the fingerprint reader takes all my fingers, ususally from the first time (exept dry hands etc etc...).

Well, to continue the story, my keyboard squeaks, the space bar in particular and some of the keys on the keyboad too. Also, the space between the ultranav and the fingerprint reader is depressable, about 2mm I'd say, and it makes an annoying cracing noise.

The last bit that really friggin botherd me is that no matter what battery I insert (6 or 9 cells), the right hand side doesn't seem to fully lock. I checked the lock for defaults, but boath the batt and the dock seem in perfect shape. Like when you turn over the laptop, and try to move the battery on the position the furthest away from the lock (left hand side of the machine from this pov), you can move it up and down about 3mm... and that shouldn't be on a machine like this, for THIS price...

Then there is this little nucance that my mouse/ext HD sometimes disconnect automatically, I figured it was software related, but after a call to lenovo it seemed this was -yet again- a mobo problem (e.g some soldering that came loose).

I'm guessing some of you guys are thinking "He's gonna throw it in the bin!", but thank GOD I got 3 year, next business day on-site repair... And I'm takin that thing for a good spin around town!

I called them today (finally had some time to get 'round to it, I'm a college student, and time doesn't come cheap) and had them make a hardware case for it. I'm expecting them to come over tomorrow for the exchange of the mobo to cancel out the electric shocks  . And lenovo told me to tell that guy, whatever little thing might bother me, and he'll fix it.

So I'm currently still very happy despite the fact that it's been quite an ordeal working on this machine. (Great performance, but it's the small aggravations éh)

I will keep updating the "repair status" here, so that you can all follow this story, since Thinkpad tazers are a new thing, no?
(All kinds of mental support are greatly appreciated, I'm in my exams at the moment)

Btw, I'll take some pics of the repairs/gutted TP if you guys want.
(or pics of the problems  )

I think the rule here is to link to the pictures, rather than use [img] tags to include them inline.

Yes; inline links are the best way to go unless you have a really pressing need to embed the pictures. If they are less than 50KB, then they can be embedded. More than that requires either a warning in the post topic or, again, inline linking. :)

I personally prefer thumbnails linked to large images... a nice compromise. Some image hosting provide that automatically too.

Voila... I took some photo's of the problems. Mind you, it's a 2MP Sony Ericsson mobile phone cam, so it's not glamerously funky... but you get the picture when you look at them

The battery jiggling a tad is normal for the most part; I don't know how much the screen cable metal cover should actually cover on, but it doesn't cover the entire cable length on mine either...Not sure if it is proportional to that though. When closed, it is a very smal, protected and laminated portion of the cable that you can see curving up into the cover and finally the LCD.

The LCD cover has, as far as I can tell, a differential stressing when you start to open it. Mine locks down solid, when opened you can feel the left edge spring up a bit more as you push it open from the right; I am pretty sure that is part of the "One-Handed Open" design although it should , again, lock down securely once it is closed. Make sure to lock it evenly from the center or both sides because of this. It isn't a problem as far as I can tell and actually a great help when opening the LCD lid.

I don't know why the keyboard squeeks; if all the screws are in place, then it has to be a problem with the keyboard itself.

HTH :)

Well that was easy... They flung out the old mobo, fixed the bezels, the batt was, as you guys said, very common but the rest is fixed... So now the testing starts

I'm very pleased! :D
