T42p Looking for Best/Fastest Hardrive

#1 Post by jhrain » Wed Jun 07, 2006 1:46 pm

I'm reaching out again to this amazing group.

I'd like at a minimum 60Gig 7,200RPM Hardrive. I use an external device to store large files, so size really isn't that big a deal.

I'm looking for performance and reliability. I've read the forums for about an hour and am still not sure the best path to take.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Hitachi 7K60!

Relatively cheap, reliable and quiet.

Check www.zipzoomfly.com and www.newegg.com for pricing.

Hard Drive

I second that notion. A Hitachi Travelstar 7200rpm drive would be sweet. They are fast reliable drives.

I third that notion. :)

The Hitachi 7K60 is a very good and reliable drive, I have two, both get placed in the 2nd HDD caddy and get carted around everywhere bare. No problems or errors from any of them thus far. Most laptops I have seen usually have a 7K60 in them as well, even when they were made just by IBM. :)

At the risk of being non-conformant, I would personally go with a Seagate drive :-) My experiences with the 7k60 are not great. (vibration and noise)

I'm giving another vote for hitachi's, I had a 5400 RPM seagate for the longest time before going to a 7200 RPM Hitachi, the difference was immediately noticeable. The seagate in comparison was much louder and more annoying, especially when the HDD Active Protection was triggered, seagate's have a very annoying spin-up sound.

Why not the 7K100 - it uses less power and has, I believe a slight speed improvement over the 7K60 (although only really measurable by HDD-o-philes).

Is this for your T42p?

You should be aware that all of those machines come with either a 7K60 or 5K80 HD from the factory.

I've upgraded the 7K60s in my two T41p machines to 7K100s, work great.

I have the Hitachi TravelStar 7200rpm 100GB!
I got it for $156.00 brand new from a store in San Diego thru eBay...
This guy is awesome, the first drive came DOA and he replaced it for free with the 30 day quick replacement warranty and the hard drive has a 3 yearservice/replacement warranty with them thru Hitachi...

here is the auction page....
I have no regrets with this seller...

IBM / Lenovo FRU ?

#11 Post by jhrain » Thu Jun 08, 2006 9:37 pm

Does anyone have the IBM/Lenovo FRU for the 100GB 7200 Hitachi Drive everyone loves so much?

I called Lenovo and they couldn't answer my question.

You really, really, don't want to buy the drive directly from Lenovo!

Their drive prices are horrific.

I am not seeing them on the IBM/Lenovo site; which probably means you are going to have to order them from a Hitachi re-seller; it is probably less expensive than buying it direct from IBM/Lenovo, too.

I would vote for seagate. Five years of warrenty is worth plenty. The drive is super quiet and superdupper fast....
