How to enable AccessIBM button

#1 Post by bri » Fri Jun 09, 2006 11:47 am

Installed WinXP on a T40 and used System Installer to get all the latest drivers, but pressing AccessIBM button doesn't do anything... is there a driver or something for it? Does the T40 have a recovery partition?

Install Access IBM online User's Guide, and Install Hotkey Features driver. Reboot, then the blue Access IBM button should work while in Windows.

The above software can be downloaded and installed from the following site: Downloads and drivers

Double-click on the file after you download it to extract the files, then run Software Installer (without connecting to the net) to install the files.

-----------------------------

To enter the Rescue and Recovery workspace, you press the blue Access IBM button at the beginning of the boot sequence.

I did get a "hotkeys" driver installed, but when I opened it there was no option for binding the AccessIBM button on the laptop keyboard, although I can enable a shortcut when using external keyboard. I'll look at it again tonight.

You should have a recovery partition, unless you did a clean install and it got lost.

As far as I know, the Hotkey drivers have little or nothing to do with the blue Access IBM button. It usually becomes disabled when you remove the partition.

Getting the latest R&R software should re-enable it, although the R&R software install won't bring back the hidden partition; the T40 and T41 have an HPA/PARTIES partition for that purpose whilst the T42 and T43 have the BEER or Predesktop area for that. :)

The Hotkey driver enables the button while in Windows for opening the Access IBM online User's Guide (same program as going to Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Access IBM).

Even if you have the Hotkey driver installed, you also need the Access IBM online User's Guide installed. I tested this recently. If you install the Hotkey driver before installing Access IBM online User's Guide, and the User's Guide will not open with the blue Access IBM button, I suggest uninstalling the Hotkey driver, reboot, then reinstall the Hotkey driver and reboot again.

The above only refers to using the blue Access IBM button while you are logged into Windows. Using this button to boot into the Rescue and Recovery workspace is another topic.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-50359 (for T40 and T40p)

Here's a direct link to what GomJabbar is referring to as the Access IBM online User's Guide.
This will allow your Access IBM button to work under WinXP.
