Upgrading memory on T40 2374-BU7

#1 Post by goen2tokyo » Fri Jun 09, 2006 12:40 pm

Hello!

This is my first time posting at this community. I have lurked here for the past day and this seems like a great place to talk shop about our Thinkie P's.

My question today is regarding the RAM on my t40. I currently have 512MB via one module installed of DDR 333 (PC2700)
I was thinking of upgrading to a second 512 MB due to a few limitation I have been hitting using certain audio software. First and foremost, my question is if my board can support PC3200? I realize that I can put in DDR 400 and it will clock down, but I don't want to pay extra for it if I can't TRULY support it :)

Secondly, I just removed the keyboard and checked the memory and it is DDR 333 Mhz. In CPU-Z or any other hardware monitor, it is showing up as 133 Mhz (X2 = 266). This makes me sad :(

I am hoping that this is just a issue of it being clocked down in the BIOS. I am going to try that now... Failed. I don't know why the board would clock it down. I would imagine that it should support PC2700 if not PC3200!

Well... I guess that's why I am here. :)

Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Randy O.

Hey guys,
I just spoke to a techician and he told me that since my clock speed is only 133 Mhz the RAM will only run at 266Mhz. I looked up info on the i850PM chipset boards and they claim to support up to 333Mhz.... I am majorly confused. Having this guy laugh at me didn't help my frustration much. I kept telling him... "I understand what you are telling me, and I agree with the information, but the fact sheets on this motherboard suggest differently."
He would just laugh. Moron. :)

Any help would be great. here is the fact sheet I was telling ou about.

I don't have a copy of Tabook that includes the T40, but for the T41 there is the following listed.
256MB, 512MB, or 1GB std / 2GB max7 / PC2700 333MHz DDR1 / non-parity / CL2.5 / two 200-pin SO-DIMM sockets / std mem in one socket / one socket available
The T40 on the other hand uses PC2100 DDR-SDRAM CL2.5 SO-DIMM

ThinkWiki wrote:NOTE!
As PC2100 memory is getting increasingly difficult to aquire, PC2700 memory can be used instead. Using PC2700 memory will not increase system performance, as it will be run at only PC2100 speed.
Here is a Wikipedia entry on DDR SDRAM: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR_RAM

Sorry. :(

EDIT: I forgot to welcome you to the forum. Welcome! :)

The tawbook says exactly the same as the T41 entry in the tabook except for the reference to PC2100. Definitely won't support PC3200 and as GomJabbar said, it'll run PC2700 at PC2100 speed. If you're looking for some great prices on memory, go to the Marketplace here - brentpresley has some excellent deals on 1GB sticks :)

Thanks for the warm welcome! :)
I have been reading alot of posts (on unrelating topics) and they all seem very informative! I don't believe that this laptop will support PC2700 at all. It will run it at 266 Mhz. Oh well, so swell! I still Love my Thinkpad. ands down best laptop I have ever owned!

Thanks again for the welcome to the forums! I hope to see you guys around in the T40 forums and BEYOND!
