It varies with each series - what's your Thinkpad?

Indeed - and as this is an open-ended sort of post, there are 8 for the T42

To add to that, it's one Rescue and Recovery bootable CD plus 7 system backup CDs.

I think T42 has only 7 CDs altogether.

1 "Recscue and Recovery with Repid Restore" bootable CD + 6 "Product Recovery Disk".

Did I miss any CD? I just follow the instructions to burn the CDs myself, so, should be correct... :|

So how can you recover the system when you have only one CD drive? If you remove the RRwRR bootable CD how can you tell the PC to take the data from CD 1/7 to 7/7?

I produced with RRwRR a bootable CD and a DVD for my T23 and A31P and I wonder how I could recover the system with only one drive.

When I tested the Restore, I loaded the firt R+R disk, which it read, then the laptop itself asked for each of the 7 recovery disks as it needed them - all on one CD drive - ain't technology wonderful...

Did anybody else burn the recovery CD yourself for T42? How many CDs altogher you have at the end?

I am worrying about it, as I plan to remove the Service Partition soon. :(

Yes, I burned for T42p. There are one bootable CD-R and one DVD-R.

1: Take the CD burner out of the laptop - carefully
2: Hold it above a large piece of clean white paper (A3 - narrow side facing North-East)
3: Shake the CD burner (as detailed in IBM document TIALON89P)
4: With a small pair of tweezers pick up the bits that have fallen from the CD burner and glue them onto a previously prepared virgin CD

THERE'S your missing CD...

Ian, The CDs that IBM send are two sets:
-7 in a group (Product Recovery CD)
-1 out of 1 (IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore).

Haven't test them, but that separation looks like a good thing to me... it give us choices!
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

I know that - I just got a little fed up with people who had not received the IBM disks telling me that the number was different.

Me too, why is 1+7CDs, should be 1+6 for self-burnt ones? .

Did anybody use the 1+6 self-created recovery CDs to do the restore/recovery your T42?

Did you encounter any problems? (so, at least, you can tell us if 1+6 is enough to do the restore/recovery).

Thanks

I've started burning my recovery cds before reading this thread.

It was a bad idea, because I only had 5 blank cds and when it asked for the 6th one, I had to abort it.

I guess my 5 cds are now wasted because I have to start all over again with a new set of (hopefully enough ;) ) cds ?

Right I've had enough of all this - let's start THINKING guys - if we burn only 7 CDs when 8 are provided by IBM isn't there just a tiny weeny chance that the 1 of 1 disc contains the gubbins that uses the info on the other 7 to actually do the restore?

Ok, it's only a theory from an UNO owner, but even so...

possibly, but if thats the case, then where do you get the gubbins if you burned the disks urself, have a disk crash, and only have 7 disks with no gubbins?

Um - that's why we keep calling it 1+6 or 1+7 - there is already a master disk identified in the set.
