I have a similar problem. But for me it happens only some times, after I hybernate and resume a few times. Only then I get a blank screen, and I see the disk icon flashs about once per second. But it doesn't resume, and I have waited even 15 minutes once.
There is a little button that sends the laptop into standby. It is near the screan on the left. If it is pressed then it blanks the screen out. Check it out, maybe it is stuck, though I think it isn't the problem for you.

Try hitting the FN key, it is a hardware trigger to bring the machine out of standby, then hitting the power button *once* for one second. Although it does sound like there is some service or device that is holding up the resume process.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.

I've gotten into the habit of never using the Standby mode but the Sleep mode instead (Fn-F12). I found that the standby mode may indeed be a bit erratic (in all models, it would not surprise me if it has something to do with Windows) and that some external hardware, modems in particular, need to be physically plugged out and in again so Windows will recognize them properly after waking up from Standby.

Yeah, Windows has a big part to play in it. The BIOS is all happy to suspend the system and RAM and hit the sleep state, but Windows makes it a bit more time-consuming since it has some extra HALs and ACPIs that it takes care of first, then lets everything go. If, however, you do a good job of eliminating the drivers/services/software that hold up the suspend/resume process.fschwep wrote:I've gotten into the habit of never using the Standby mode but the Sleep mode instead (Fn-F12).
