Erratic scrolling and coasting with touchpad on T41

#1 Post by ybrosgol » Thu May 13, 2004 2:41 pm

On my new T41, I got very annoying problem with scrolling and coasting. When a cursor on a scrolling page hits the top or the bottom of the page, the scrolling freezes and the whole page jitters until I retap the cursor.
Coasting is inconsistent, jumpy: on other touchpads it starts immediately as soon as you take your finger off after making stroking movement along the right border of a pad. Here, there is always a 1 second delay and only then it does the coasting. Moreover, the coasting itself is not smooth, but rather jumpy and jerky. On other systems (I have Compaq to compare) coasting and scrolling are silky smooth, moving up or down line by line. Here it may skip paragraphs and sometimes pages.

I installed the latest driver. Reinstalled Windows XP THREE TIMES! (I really need this function since I type all the time). Nothing worked. Help!

Start off with - I really hate the touchpad.....

The pad is very sensitive to temperature changes, does it not work in the morning then to start working in the afternoon?

I find that the point is far easier to use why I type anyway, and kill off the touchpad.

For everyone using a touchpad on IBMs!
Of course, it is the matter of preference, touchpad or track point. But what I learned the hard way, is that the IBM driver just SUCKs! It gave me all the erratic scrolling and coasting problems I pained about for several weeks.
Eventually I went to an HP site and downloaded their driver for a Compaq touchpad device. And now it works seamlessly on my beautiful IBM T-41!

Speak for yourself :P I use both the trackpoint and touchpad on my T41 and both work perfectly with the stock drivers.

In the Device Manager, go to the Ultranav pointing device, and in the advanced settings tab play around with the input buffer length and sample rate and see if that helps. You can also right-mouse click on each option to get a description of each setting. I had to do that for my erratic touchpad.
