usb devices not detected. failed mb? request replacement pc?
so i sent my t40 in for repair about a month ago, because it wouldnt turn on. got it back with a replacement mb and then the trackpad didnt work. now on my 3rd board, when i plug any usb device in, it shows up in device manager as unsupported device, and i must click update drivers to get it to work. this makes no sense because devices such as usb memory sticks or my ipod (with itunes installed) dont require a driver in order to be recognized under windows xp sp2. so i sent it in to get repaired AGAIN, and they are sending it back saying nothing is wrong. is this something that is common to windows xp? i had just reinstalled the os so maybe the drivers have to always be initailized once before the device works? ive forgotten what problems occur when using a fresh os. however, i couldnt get the system to boot off a usb memory stick, even though i had it formatted with the hp boot utility. so i figure there must be something wrong with the usb hardware.
anyways the question i have is: is my usb hardware defective requiring another mb replacement? and if so, does anyone have experience or know if its possible to request a comparable (and newer) system instead? ive heard that if a part is replaced 3 times then you become eligible. what sort of system would i expect to recieve as replacement (i have a T40 2373-72u)? and how exactly would i go about requesting this? i am pretty tired of sending it in every time i get it back, for another mb-related issue.

yes, thats what i did. after the fresh install i noticed the devices werent being recognized automatically like they are supposed to. this is a new machine to me so i dont know how its normally supposed to act, but my dell laptop doesnt do this when it encounters new usb devices. it seems more like a hardware issue than a software one because it won't boot from a usb device either, even though its enabled in the bios.

Mind explaining how this is a common issue in the T4Xs?cmarti wrote:I think that you will need to replace the motherboard. Common issue in T4x's.
What about posting numbers showing large shipments of T4X Thinkpads going in for Mobo replacements? Any official statements from IBM/Lenovo saying this?
It is getting more than just a bit tiring hearing of this as a "common issue" with the T4X Series Thinkpads when it really isn't and appears overblown, or least well on its way, to *Egregious* levels.

Well, I have yet to encounter a T4X Thinkpad that had to have its mainboard replaced like that. And the ones I have encountered thus far have been through alot.JPOESQ wrote:Must be something about the motherboards that isn't quite right... By no means am I convinced this is a common problem.

It's also now a common problem for the wrong model motherboard to be installed when it is replaced. And, as far as going through a lot, my T41p has never been dropped, abused, or suffered any form of use that would cause a motherboard to go bac. Both times, they were video chip related problems.
