Wireless Dead

#1 Post by shiyang » Sun Jun 18, 2006 10:31 pm

Hey guys,

My wireless on a 1871 T43 has locked itself off.

Fn+F5 brings up the screen where it's reported as off, i press on, and nothing happens, and i can't get online.

I've tried to reinstall drivers/ access connections, and even installed the drivers w/o access connections once, no good.

Any suggestions?

thanks

Ok, let me tell you. Uninstall access connection. That Access Connection sux in my R52. Really. I tried using it and in the end my R52 hangs and freeze and later make my CPU work 100% and burn my motherboard.
Some can adapt to AC but some Tp cannot. Don't know why...?

If uninstalling AC also cannot make your TP works, then <sigh> must to back up all your datas and do a fresh install. <sigh> I had already gone through this state and i am sighing and sighing whenever i see our members also have this problem. Now, i use windows to configure my wireless and i did not have AC in my computer. I removed AC from all my TP.

What does the Windows Device manager say about the current state of the device drivers for your WiFi mini-PCI card?

Given your clear lack of knowledge on communications systems, as demonstrated in the questions you have been posing on other fora here, you aren't in any sort of position to be making sweeping statements like that.

AC from IBM differs from AC Lenovo by a bit. I think the update had made your system go ga-ga..!

@bill bolton: Well said about NS. Thank you.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling drivers

#5 Post by chicomark » Mon Jun 19, 2006 6:12 am

I had a similar problem on my T41:
- (The newly installed version of) Access Connections would hang, then after about 20 mins would give a message that there was no wireless devices installed.
- I couldn't operate the wireless radio via Fn+F5, I'd get just an hour glass and nothing else.

It was caused because I had used the wireless drivers from Intel. I had been using them for about a year with no problems. Then I upgraded to the new version of AC and the problem started. To fix:
- Go to network connections and uninstall the drivers for the wireless card. Follow the uninstall instructions as there are some directories you need to delete. (The uninstall instructions are provided in the IBM link).
- Download wireless drivers from IBM, install.
- Install AC without the wireless drivers (its a different installation file, get it off IBM website)

This fixed it for me. Hope this helps! NOTE you also need to have the latest embedded controller, 3.04 I think (or higher). You can check this in your thinkpad configuration software.

Help...

#6 Post by shiyang » Mon Jun 19, 2006 12:29 pm

I tried all the above, except for the reformat.. the same problem stil.

I don'tget an hourglass either.. just nothing happens when i press turn on.

THis is with or without AC.

The device manager reports the drivers to be all good. The power on button inside the intel taskbar icon also does not respond.

could this be hardware?

Thanks guys

Check wireless card properties

#7 Post by chicomark » Tue Jun 20, 2006 4:00 am

Check these things:
1. Are you using Intel drivers or IBM drivers? Your post indicates you may be using Intel drivers. I don't have any Intel taskbar item, only a Thinkvantage one. You must download the drivers from IBM, not intel. IBM adds more stuff in there so it talks to the Fn+F5 key and Access Connections. You must also ensure you unistall correctly, did you follow the unistall instructions that tell you to delete files off the harddisk too? It will also tell you to uninstall programs from the Add/Remove programs dialog, did you do all this too (see below).
- with Intel drivers will look OK in device manager, but will not talk to Access Connections. AC controls the Fn+F5 function.

2. Check the wireless card is not switched off in windows:
- Go to Start/Control panel/networking
- Right click your wireless connection, choose Properties
- In the box where it says "Connect using", it will give the name of the wireless hardware device. Next to this is a button says "Configure...", click it.
- Go to Advanced settings. There is a tick box to turn off the radio permanently. If ticked, untick it.

3. In the network control panel, right click your wireless connection. The first option should be Disable. If it says "Enable" then you need to choose Enable.

4. In the network control panel, right click your wireless connection. Choose properties. Choose tab called "Wireless Networks". Ensure that the tick box saying "Use Windows to configure my wireless networks" is NOT ticked.

Hope this helps some! If not, I reckon will be hardware. Time to call on warranty....

Full uninstall instuctions get them off my first link

I had the same problem earlier and went thru the forum, solved my problem by renaming libeay32.dll in my windows/system 32 folder to something else.

Apparently this file is in use by something else and will conflict with the fn+f5 usage. Do a search on the forum, there's explanation about this and on Lenovo's site as well.

Hope this helps.

Dennis
