Is Windowx XP installation tied to the network hardware?

#1 Post by PaulS » Wed Jun 21, 2006 12:41 am

I have two T40's that I have switched the harddrives. I am able to boot from from both computers with the switched harddrives except the laptops are not accessible on the local network. Is the problem that the Windows installation is tied to the original network adapter that was present when Windows was installed on the harddrive? If so, is there a way to easily fix this?

If the network adapters are of a different model (i.e. one is Intel 2100 and the other is IBM Atheros), you may need to install network drivers for the adapter which was not present in the original installation.

Try going to the device manager (control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager), and see if the network adapters of the system are listed, and if they appear to be installed ok, when you click "properties".

If the adapters are of the same model, it should make no difference, and the problem is probably elsewhere.
