TP Wakes While Lid is Closed

#1 Post by ipark » Wed Jun 21, 2006 7:12 pm

I'm having a little trouble figuring out what's going on with my tp while the lid is closed. When the tp was running on batteries it had about 95% charge left and then I closed the lid, and about 5 hours later it was down to 79%. I heard the beep after closing the lid, so I knew it went in to standby.

This has never happened before and I'm assuming that while the lid is closed and is on standby, the tp wakes by itself a couple of hours later and runs. I woke up this morning while the lid was closed - and should have been on standby - only to find the bottom of the tp pretty

Has anyone ever experienced this problem and, if so, has anyone figured out what the problem was?

That may be because it has either Wake-on-LAN on or something scheduled to bring it out of suspend/hibernation. :)

wow, thanks for the super fast response. What is wake-on-lan? And what should I do to prevent the tp from waking while the lid is closed?
So does that mean that everyone goes through this problem aswell?
Thanks

If it'd suspended you would've seen the little lit "Moon" indicator. Do you recall if it was lit?

No, Wake-on-LAN is a feature that, if I recall correctly, can be toggled in the BIOS (either there or in the System control panel. It has the ability to bring the system out of a suspend or hibernate state if LAN activity is detected. The same can be done via an OS scheduler; for, say, a defrag scheduled at 1:00PM and, if the system is in suspend or hibernate at that time, it will resume and start the defrag process in the OS. :)

ahhh thanks for the information.

As for the moon being on, I don't remember. All I know is that the TP was pretty warm when the lid had been closed for sometime.

I'm going to turn off the WOL in the bios and hopefully that'll solve the problem. Thank you!

I see the same problem with my T42.

This may sound goofy but here's my observation:

When I Stand By from menu while plugged into my Mini Dock (lid closed), then I eject, my battery will wear down about 1% per hour.

When I use T42 on battery then close lid to stand by, my battery will wear down about 3% per hour. Yes the green moon lights up both times.

The above observations aren't totally reliable, since this hasn't been very important to me.

Also I agree about the comments about stuff scheduled to run. Our corporate IT department has all sorts of checks they run repeatedly for virus checking and for pushing patches and to catalog what software is installed. One or more of those may be taking the machine out of Stand By.

My T42 is quite often warm after being in Stand By for an hour or two. Especially after I close lid while on battery power. So your experience is certainly not unique.

if something is waking it up, or you just cant figure it out- my only "solution" would be to set your standby time to 1 minute before you put it into standby, so if it wakes up hopefully it will put itself back to sleep.
