Access Connection - unable to create or edit profiles

Hi,
recently the Software installer updated my Access Connection to newest version 4.12. While everything worked flawlessly with the profiles taken from the previous version, I'm not able to search for nets, create or edit profiles (the menu items are greyed).
These tasks are now (according to the "help") limited to Administrators (I'm logged in to XP as a Administrator but no success). Additionally these functions are to be activated by the Adminstrator Enable Tool (ADMENBLR.EXE), which in fact seems not to make any change to my installation...
Any hints how to get the ability to create and edit profiles back to Access Connection?

Hi,
your links points to a (similar) problem with the power manager, which works perfectly on my T43p.
I searched the Registry for some entry which "enables / disables" the confiuration function (I think similar is done by the admenblr), but no success...

If you have existing profiles that you would like to use, go and write down the information. Then I would suggest going to Windows Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall Access Connections and all profiles. Reboot, then reinstall Access Connections. Now create your profiles again. I believe this will solve your problem.

Hi,
I unistalled Access Connection as suggested deleting all profiles (as I also assumed this would cause Access Conncetions to reset). Unfortunatley that was wrong. I ended with an Access Connection without any profile to use, still not being able to create profiles (same stupid warning to ask the network admin, still no function of the Admenblr.exe).
Now I reinstalled an old 3.71 I still had on disk which works...
Anyone with similar problems?

I believe I read where others that had the same problem found that the previous version of Access Connections did not fully uninstall, and this caused the newer version not to work. There were leftovers in the registry mucking things up. I could probably find the thread if I spend a little time. IRRC, it was in the T4x Series forum.

Access Connections ties in tightly with your wireless driver. Sometimes you have to uninstall Access Connections, reboot, then uninstall your wireless driver. Reboot again, then cancel any Found Hardware wizards. Next install the wireless driver, reboot, then install Access Connections.

I think the above has a good likelyhood of working. However, you can read more on this by using the search button at the top of the screen. Try typing in: Access Connections profiles upgraded, and choose Search for all terms.

Hi,
I did a complete uninstall of Access Connections and the wireless drivers, rebootet after uninstallation of each package. After that I installed the wireless LAN newest version (4.1.102.147), rebootet and then I installed the Access Connections 4.12. Unfortunately without any success...
Still the administrator message appears and no chance to edit or create any profiles.
There seems to be more problems or may be the MUI version of XP causes the trouble...

I feel like I've been leading you down a rabbit hole.

OK, here are a couple of things to check.
(1) Open Access Connections. Click on Configure > Global Settings..., and see if first box is checked: "Allow Windows users without administrator privileges to create and apply location profiles".
(2) Make sure the following is not causing the problem.
Intel wireless adapters have limited connection methods and cannot be controlled via Fn + F5 - ThinkPad
(3) If you don't mind looking in the registry, this is what I found in mine. The profiles appear to be stored in the registry with Access Connections 4.12. Check the permissions for the keys. You have to go to Start > Run, and type regedt32 in the text box, then press the ENTER key. Only regedt32 can change permissions, regedit cannot.

Creater Owner is the account you have set up for Administrator.
Administrators have full control.
System has full control.
Administrator account you have set up has control for this key only.
Creator Owner has full control of subkeys only.

Additionally, I found the following file on my computer that I couldn't access. I believe this is a leftover from a previous install.
C:\IBM\Access\access-config.ini
I had to boot into Safe Mode to set permissions to gain access to these folders and file.

It is possible you have a folder or file that lost it's permissions, and is denying you access. This file or folder may not have been deleted when you uninstalled Access Connections, thus preventing the new install from properly working.

Hi,
okay after another 2 hours of trying to get this stuff working I gave up.
I uninstalled Access Connections, removed any remaining entry in the Registry with "Access Connections" as part of its name and also deleted all remaining folders, but after installation of Access Connections I still have no chance to create profiles.
I also reconginzed that there is a "network configuration operators" group for the user account. I added this to my profile, even that did not solve the problem...
I know that there was one 4.x version running, meanwhile I got a 4.11a, showing the same problem.
I definitely have no idea where the problem could be located, but it's quite frustrating spending hours with no success.

I'm sorry I couldn't help you. I've about run out of ideas. Hopefully someone else has a solution for you.

My only solution left is the nuclear approach.

Reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything.

But again, hopefully someone else can lead you to a satisfactory solution, or at least an explaination.

I'm using a T42 and having the exact same problems with Access Connections 4.23. After some uninstall, clean registry, clean folder, reinstall... all without any success.

After reading a will threads in the forum, then I realize this problem might caused by some security settings. The main different is that I logged on to my W2k Server using another login name "abc" (with Administrators rights).

Then I logged of and logon using Administrator and viola! I can create a new, edit and delete any profile in AC. I logon using my "abc" username and I can edit and delete the profile created earlier. I still couldn't create a new profile using my "abc" username.

Hope this can help to solve partially the AC profiles editing problem.

I meanwhile switched over to VISTA, thus solving this problem by reinstallation / change of OS. I sitll think it was an issue with my multilingual version of XP, but for XP times I solved this by reinstallation an older version.
