Serial # and Machine model missing

#1 Post by geep » Fri Jun 23, 2006 10:33 pm

My machine's serial # and machine model are missing from the info usually included in the System Infomation pop-up window accessible through Access IBM.

What can I do to restore them? Thanks.

Call IBM Help and/or return the machine for service. ... JD Hurst

When you reboot and enter BIOS, do you see them?

Yes. They both appear within the BIOS settings.

And why do you want to chage it?

I too upgraded my T40 and i did not chanege the machine type number ot the serial number there is no need to do it because the software installer will give you whatever driver you need.

You are a very fortunate one... there is a maintenance disk which you use to enter the correct serial number and other id's when you change a motherboard so that you are not blocked from updates. Most likely, your motherboard data is still good, but it could be invalidated at some point in time if the motherboard is taken out of the system (unlikely).

I may not have explained my self and the situation well in my first post.

When I:

-press the blue 'Access IBM' button

- once the 'Access IBM' window appears, I then click on the 'System Information' link

-a pop-up window then appears and displays my system's information

The first two lines of info should normally indicate my machine's serial number and machine model type. For me, these two lines are blank. Any ideas why this is so? Thanks.

While I am not commenting specifically on how the model and serial number are retrieved, I believe that some of this information is collected by an IBM program called eGatherer.

Frequently asked questions - Automated solutions
Lenovo wrote:Automated solutions are executables and scripts developed by IBM. We use an ActiveX control developed by IBM to download and run the solutions.

The solutions use a variety of tools to perform tasks. We commonly use an IBM tool called eGatherer to collect the information about the system (however, we do not collect any information that would violate your privacy). We also frequently use tools and techniques available from Microsoft to check and adjust settings. In addition, we sometimes use tools developed by third party vendors to perform certain tasks such as hardware problem diagnosis.
