system clock problems

#1 Post by erozsolt » Wed Jun 28, 2006 9:04 am

I have a T40 and I use hibernation daily, but since 2-3 days, my system clock is always out of sync when I resume from hibernation. It IS connected to AC so I don't think the battery could be wrong. I didn't tried it deeply, but I think the clock is slowing down, or stopping completely while it's in hibernation. Is it a common problem?

Isn't it getting power from AC if it's connected?

Yes but when if you are speaking of the system clock and not the OS clock as i remember the CMOS battery is the one that keeps it.

No, I don't use any DirectX application, and it is not a slight slowdown, I mean system clock stops sometimes, but not always. I just tried shutdown and wain, hybernate and wain, but this time it works.

How much is it behind? A minute for 12 hours of hibernation, or more?

My clock is still pretty lousy compared to others even after the motherboard change a few months ago. About 70PPM (70 millionths of a second wrong per 1 second) vs 15PPM that should be normal. 70PPM means about 6 seconds per day; 15PPM is ~1.3s/day.
So if you're a 'sharp' person, that's really annoying that one can't be without syncing for a day or two.

It is not DirectX (game) application only but everyting which uses a technology from "DirectX family", for example DirectDraw. Even such applications like ICQ client use it.

It's just strange, it was 3 hour behind yesterday, now it's normal. I just installed Atomic Clock Sync, it's a one-click sync solution and says how much adjustment was needed.

CMOS battery is the prime suspect.
Though your new app helps you overcome the problem, it doesn't solve your root cause.
