upgrading my t40p

#1 Post by caffemusse » Wed Jun 28, 2006 10:59 am

:D
Lucky owner of the great machine t40p... running just fine.

I would like to upgrade it so it gives me more juice..

Looking at cpu upgrade, hd, and ram.
-Ram pretty much speeks for itself, going for 1,5gb and when I've sold the 512mb upgrade the last slot to 2gb.
-Can they run a 2.1ghz 400fsb chip? seen some people with one here? Or would I experience a nice juice increase with a 1.8ghz Dothan? (got Banias now) Anyone got one for sale by the way?
-HD depends on how much more noise and vibration a 7200 drive would give... any suggestions on the quiet drive in that league?
Or should I wait and see ( and enjoy the other two upgrades first and then decide if it is necessary)?

Isn't there a bottleneck with regard to performance on a t40p like fsb or the like?

Hope some of you clever custom tp builders have suggestions (Cmarti, Brentpr)

Cheers

Steps to achieve the most noticeable performance increse via upgrades.

1) Memory. First thing to upgrade and the biggest "bang" for the buck.

2) 7200RPM HD. Easy upgrade, don't believe the tales of noise and vibration. Hitachi 7K60 or 7K100 preferred. Not much noticeable performance increase over a good 5400RPM HD, but simply awe inspiring over an old 4200RPM HD.

3) CPU. Unless you can upgrade your CPU by 25% or more (e.g. 1.5GHz to a 2.0GHz) it's highly unlikely that you'll actually notice any speed increase on your system.

T40p with P-M 765 here. That was an upgrade from 1.6->2.1ghz. The laptop becomes more responsive and I'm loving it.

Anyway, just like other people said. RAM first, then HD, then CPU.
-T42p 2374-D03 with Pentium M 765 2.1GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 7k60 HDD, IBM 802.11 a/b/g II wireless, 6-cell battery, and no touchpad
-X61 Tablet 7764-CTO with 3GB RAM and 7k200 HDD
-W500 4061-CTO all stock

"Best" place in the EU is probably Crucial memory for their "it works or we replace it" guarantee.

Other than that, any name brand PC2100 or PC2700 memory will work just fine, although PC2700 memory will run at PC2100 speed and you should not mix and match PC2100 and PC2700 memory together.

Thx
But will try elsewhere with purchasing memory.... Denmark as you may have noted is very expensive....
Wierd that the difference in prices is that great between US and Europe.

Still going for the 1gb sticks though.

We've long ago discussed the pricing differences between the US and EU to death.

~€130.41 inc. VAT is not that expensive for 1GB of PC2700! The cheapest 1GB PC2700 you'[ll find over here is ~$95 with shipping, not including any "special" sales or rebates.

If you want to see expensive, click on the UK link on Crucial's webpage and the same memory costs ~£89.29 inc. VAT! That's ~$165!

Or, check what's for sale here on the Forum, I doubt there'd be any problems shipping RAM to DK.

Yes..tis a good discussion. But being a student I'll try to find sómething cheaper ...perhaps here via the marketplace.

Fastest CPU for you would be the Pentium M 765 (2.1GHz, 400MHz FSB).

It should plug right in and run fine.

Following recommendations from JHEM and others on this forum I bought Crucial memory from UK, 48 hour shipping to your door.

I also upgraded the HD to 7K100 and the WIFI to 2200BG and switched to a palmrest without touchpad.

I like my T41p even moore after the upgrades, however that havent stopped me from wanting to by more and more Thinkpads of different types. A X60s is first on my wishlist.

Mats
