New IBM Thinkpad T42 Pixelation

#1 Post by fireracer7 » Tue Aug 10, 2004 10:43 am

I just received my IBM Thinkpad T42 (2373-3VU) and had a question with regards to the screen. It is currently running on 16 bit color at the 1400 x ? resolution. I am noticing what seems to be some pixelation along the top grey bar of Internet Explorer as well as in the top grey bar of the My Computer window. I minimized Internet Explorer and the pixelation remained, therefore not pointing to a defect in the screen. I also opened another program and noticed none of this pixelationalong its top bar, therefore pointing that the problem is not with the screen, but perhaps with the resolution/color/etc. used in Internet Explorer, My Computer.

Can you please help? :?:

its a "problem" with IE... either live with it, or increase your video colors and it will go away....

Try bumping it up to 32bit. Seemed to work for me.

Leon,

So you can confirm that I am not the only one experiencing it? Do you have similar specs on your Thinkpad.

The main reason I was asking about this problem is that I do not experience on my desktop at home nor at my desktop at work?!

Thank you!

mine looks fine. I'd also recommend using 32bit. right click on desktop > properties >settings

good luck

Is this pixelation problem a result of the Thinkpad, IE, laptops in general, etc? I am not experiencing this problem on my CRT at work or my desktop LCD at home.

No, you can see it on any computer/monitor, depending on the interaction between the video resolution and the resolution of the graphic on screen. Increasing the resolution to 24bit or 32 bit usually gets rid of it at a slight penalty on performance.

all TXX's that I have seen exhibit this.... IF increasing the color depth clears it up on your machine, then you are OK!

Fireracer7 - would you PLEASE do us all a big favour and bump up your resolution to 32bit (or confirm it's already at this setting) so that we have a base to work from - it's very difficult with so many good ideas not knowing what or which you have applied.

Ian,

I will gladly do that when I get home at 5 PM and post my results. However, according to an earlier post, it seems like this is normal. Can you confirm this?

I think you're missing my point - Is it normal ? yes and no.

Yes - if you have the colour quality set at 16 bit this is an effect which could occur

No - if it's set at 32 bit, probably not.

I have a 15" Flexview at native resolution (1400 x 1050) with 32 bit colour depth and I must say the images/icons etc are VERY sharp - far and away better than my IBM P201 CRT etc etc.

Ian,

I see what you are saying. I will change the resolution to 32 bit when I get home and try to post a screenshot too. So far (I have only had the laptop for 1 day) the images/icons dont seem pixelated; I only noticed it on the navigation bar in Internet Explorer/My Computer.

Yes.. just change it to 32bit and it'll go away. Mine had it when it shipped. Some people notice it, some people don't.

How many confirmations do you want? It's been discussed many times. As to why it occurs when you're running something other than 32bit is just part of the nature of the Thinkpad's LCD's interaction with Internet Explorer.

Logi7 I don't see what you're seeing.

The display also changes to 16-bit color when running on battery if the ATI power save mode is enabled (which it is by default), and switches back to 32-bit color when you plug the laptop, while it's on, into the AC adapter.

I tried changing it to 32 bit and it is much better. I can still see the slight pixelation, but it is a major improvement. Thank you!
