It depends on the type of applications you are running, display brightness, wireless network activity, and the capacity of your battery.

If your battery has degraded in its ability to hold energy, your battery life will be poor.

When I owned a T40, I got about 4-4.5 hours on a new 48 Watt*Hr battery if my display was at half brightness, WiFi was on, and I was running light applications like Microsoft Word.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

Go to the ThinkPad "System Configuration" utility on your T40, and look at the Battery Information section to see information on the current condition of your battery. Particularly look at the current capacity and "cycle" information, and post that data here.

Cheers,

Bill

looks like you may have to buy a new one...full charge capacity is supposed to be around 47 Wh...your battery is just dying. Time for a new one and then you'll definitely get more than the hour 30 you said.

Battery durantion depends on what you are doing, but if you run on battery maximise settings in power manger for basic note taking, you should get around 3+ hours with a new battery... with probably a bit less if you run WiFi.

You have 245 cycles on your 3+ year old battery, so you have got a good run out of it.

Cheers,

Bill
