WIFI UPGRADE: wow! I did it and it runs smoothly

#1 Post by caffemusse » Sun Jul 02, 2006 1:52 pm

Managed to purchase an AR5005 gx mini pci card on Ebay.
easy....
Then install it in my t40p...
easy....
Then download the linux image to override the 1802 TP error
easy...(http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 02+atheros)

My T40p is up and running real smooth with this new power card.
(although I'm currently unable to manage my wifi settings with FN+f5 ie Acess... maybe I will figure it out- or maybe just non-doable?)
Thanx again to the threads that helped me solve the tricky business of adding non-offical IBM hardware into the machine.

Isn't it just great when it works? :D

Bill has set up a great site for us! :D
What would we do without it? (Be like this little guy to the right  :? )

I did almost the same upgrade with my T40 and have found the same thing (although I let Windows manage my settings, so it's not an issue for me). But otherwise, I found my experience of a wifi upgrade to be pretty much as easy as you did! :)

Gom, I think I'd be more like this guy:

I have an IBM Intel card. Fn-F5 can't manage power state unless I install the IBM driver. It doesn't matter to me much since I just disable the device at Windows level.

Have you guys tried using IBM driver for your non-IBM card? You might need to adjust the device IDs in inf file though.

I did install the IBM driver - where would I be able to find the inf file to change the device ID?

8) Looks like progress is being made over that evil  1802 block that TP has.

Any chance it may work if 1802 block is removed after the card is modded? (soft)
Please keep us posted if you manage to make it work fine via FN+f5 with a non-ibm wireless.
An me being a NooB to this modding stuff, would really appreciate a 'walkthrough' (especially on chaning the inf. file and locating the correct IBM driver for my card AR5005 gs)

looking forward to hearing more modding stuff. 'tis truly interesting stuff...! :P
