LCD Panel flexing after repair, normal?

#1 Post by JJapie » Thu Jul 06, 2006 4:01 am

A few weeks ago, the LCD Panel of my T42 (2373 / 14") got broken. There were some weird spots on my panel, so IBM replaced it, or at least tried to replace it.
I live in The Netherlands, as stated in my profile. In The Netherlands, a sub-contracter named MSO carries out the repairs for IBM since Lenovo took over the PC division of IBM. It took them 4 weeks to fix my notebook!

Since I've got next business day on-site warranty, the engineer came to my office first (on a friday) to replace the panel. But after replacing it, the notebook didn't work anymore, so he told me he'd call me the same day to make an appointment for next Monday. Well as I was afraid for, he didn't call me back, so I had to call IBM myself. IBM on her turn couldn't make an appointment for me and told me I had to wait till MSO would call me, which they did on Tuesday. The engineer came again to my office, and worked for an hour on my notebook, but wasn't able to fix it. He told me he had to take the laptop in to the repaircenter, because else he would have to come back for at least three times (he said that literally). He promised me that I would get my notebook back by the end of the week. By Thirsday I still hadn't heard a thing from MSO or IBM, so I decided to call IBM again to ask for clarification. According to IBM, the panel was replaced (again) and a new planar/motherboard was ordered now. I asked the dude at IBM when I could expect my notebook back, but he couldn't say anything. I told him about the promise the engineer made, but he couldn't say or do anything about it. In the meantime, I was far behind schedule for my work.
Well, the story continued for another three weeks, the panel was replaced once again, a new planar was ordered once again, the invertor was replaced, the LCD cable was replaced and some stuff more. According to the people at IBM (who all knew about my case after two weeks) the case counted 32 pages by the end.

After four weeks being send off empty-handed, I decided to file a complaint (I tried that before, but the dudes at IBM kept telling me that my laptop would be fixed by the next day, cause a new part was ordered etcetera). An IBM lady (from the complaint department, or whatever it is called in English) called me back soon and she told me she would escalate the whole thing and help me get my notebook back soon. Well, it worked, she called me on Friday and I had my notebook back on Monday.

But MSO [censored] my notebook up pretty well. Screws were missing, stickers on the screws where placed very messy and the most important of all, my LCD panel suffers from flexing! I told that to the IBM lady when she called, and she would send over an engineer, to have it all fixed. This engineer of MSO came pretty soon, followed by an IBM guy. The engineer fixed the screw stickers, and had a look at the panel-flexing problem. The IBM guy told me that it was normal, cause an panel is very thin bla bla bla. The only thing is that it wasn't before I sent the notebook in for repair! But well, of course the IBM dude and the MSO engineer didn't believe me and said that was impossible.

My question to you guys is, do your notebooks suffer from panel-flexing too? I only have to tap on the back to see a sort of wrinkles in my screen (the effect you get when you throw a stone in the water, or something like it). It can be seen the best on a blue background. I hope some of you will try it for me, so I know if this is a normal thing, or that it is because of a bad repair or something.
My T42 is a 14"-model, that might make a difference. I don't know if the covers of the 14" and 15" models are exactly the same.
Also, when I firmly place my notebook on my desk, I can see the wrinkles too. I don't think this is a good thing..

Also, I noticed yesterday when I was walking with my notebook to the kitchen, that when I shake with it a little bit, the screen doesn't hold its position, like the hinges aren't screwed tight enough or something. I didn't notice this before, and will mention this to the IBM dude when I call him about my screen problem.

I'm really really not happy with the service of Lenovo, they take ages to repair your laptop, won't give you a replacement for the meantime and screw up your laptop very hard. I'm really sad about this all, I really loved my T42, but it feels like a piece of junk now. With all the problems, I really haven't got any trust in the notebook anymore, I totally lost my confidence and I'm very sorry about it, yeah it's a pity, it really is :(

Check your private messages. I have sent you detailed instructions on how to fix the issue and the parts you need. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it.
I might be able to fix this myself, although I have my doubts about the screen (I really don't know what can be the cause of the wrinkels). The last engineer that touched my notebook disassembled and assembled some parts of the screen (the bezel) and put the screws in and out again to assure that they were put in correctly. All of this didn't fix anything.

Another problem is that by fixing the notebook myself, I will probably void the warranty, something I really don´t want to do..

When I sent the notebook in for repair, it was in a perfect condition, except for the screen which had some weird spots (it weren't pressure points) on it. The notebook came back as a piece of junk, something I'm very mad and sad about. In my opinion, IBM or Lenovo has to fix my notebook, they have to bring it back to the condition it was in at the moment I sent it in for repair..

You probably own a thinkpad yourself; could you please check if your screen suffers from LCD flexing too, the way my notebook does? If other thinkpad owners don't experience this kind of flexing, I can tell and kind of prove IBM/Lenovo that there is really something wrong with it..
