DVD Burning
DVD Burning
I use DVD Shrink to make backups of my Video DVDs on my T42. I first get disk image files (.VOB files, etc.), and then use Nero to burn them to the DVD. I would prefer to use Intervideo Win DVD Creator, but cannot figure out a way for it to read the directory with the .VOB files so I can burn them. Any suggestions?

Try scouring around for a remaining copy of DVD Copy Express. Works like a charm but was withdrawn recently and the company has now gone belly-up.

no, you guys have it wrong... let me explain.... if ANYTHING is illegal, it is the DVD Shrink Software that Decrypts/ Extracts the files from the DVD to the Hard Drive (works like a charm). After they are extracted, you can play them from the hard drive with programs like Intervideo WinDVD. If you use Nero (which is a commercial, legal program), you can burn the Disk Image files onto a DVD, and it will play. I want to use Intervideo WinDVD Creator to do the burning instated of NERO, but just want to figure out how to get it to read the same files that NERO will read so I can use it to burn.

Why? I've had no problems with DVD Shrink + Nero.Leon wrote:I would prefer to use Record Now
Not available from their liquidator ( http://www.jambalayabrands.com/shop.asp ) but may still be available in local stores. However, it doesn't do anything that DVD Shrink + Nero can't do.sktn77a wrote:Try scouring around for a remaining copy of DVD Copy Express. There is a lot of good information in the Doom9 guides about making DVD backups with either freeware or commericial software. It is quite extensive in the area of DVDs.

Been doing DVD's for a couple of years now...NOT ILLEGAL if you only use the discs as back-ups of the discs you already have. Everyone on the boards talk about "backing up," not about copying....so, if you're having trouble searching the sites, keep this in mind. Doom9 is a great site. Also try www.cdfreaks.com and www.dvdrhelp.com (a bunch of helpful stuff there).
Here's the process I use.
I have DVDdecryptor (free download...look on Doom9) , but I only use it to look at the VOB structure to decide how I want to extract and burn the discs.
1. Bring up AnyDVD (look around...should be able to download without much trouble, or if it costs something now, it's not much.) AnyDVD allows extraction of the DVD file structure without any copy gaurd issues or Region coding...and all of this "on the fly."
2. Start DVD2ONE (a small program that will fit on a floppy...costs, I believe $35 now...look for it at www.dvd2one.com ). Select whole disc, just the movie or "join" to join 2 or more movies or parts of a movie...like chapters if it's on 2 or more discs. I use this also to join several music video files as they are small and a waste of a DVD blank to only burn one on the disc. Save whatever files you have in a folder called VIDEO_TS, selecting the audio and subtitle preferences you want. This folder along with a blank folder called AUDIO_TS should then be....
3. Burn(ed) with your favorite software...I like RecordNowMax (often comes with burners you buy, but can be downloaded for a price)... Burn both the VIDEO_TS folder and the blank AUDIO_TS folder and if you give the disc a name in RNM, make sure it's all caps and no space (use underscore between the names "-" ).
Total process:
1. Extraction of files to VIDEO_TS folder (AnyDVD running in background with DVD2ONE doing the extraction = 15 to 25 minutes.
2. Burning process (depending on speed) 1X=@60 mins, 2X=@30mins, 4X=@15mins, 8X=@7-8mins.
With decent set-up, the total process takes 20-30minutes. Not sure how fast most of your Thinkpads can do this process, but I would think the higher end ones aren't much different than my home built desktop.
I should add that the above process is the same for "-" or "+" formatted blank discs.
Guess that wraps it up....any questions?

I REALLY appreciate the detailed/informed response, and on behalf of others on this board, thanks for clarifying the issue of copy protection in a clear and concise way.
I'm STILL wondering if Intervideo Win DVD, which is supplied on some Thinkpads (and is sold as a commercial program), can do only the last step (Step #3 in the above post), i.e. can it read in and then burn the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders that I happen to create with DVD-SHRINK.

Simple answer is "NO."
WinDVD, as far as I'm concerned can only play DVDs (and other video files), unless things have changed since I messed with this program, a few months back.
I really hate WinDVD and prefer PowerDVD for my viewing on the Thinkpad. Infact, the first thing I usually do when I get a Thinkpad is to take WinDVD off of it completely and load up PowerDVD...it's just better quality.
For burning, I prefer in order:
RecordNow (there's a Max and Deluxe...in my opinion, they are the same)
Latest Nero
Easy CD/DVD Creator

Can you not just drag the two folders into it, or does it do the whole process from beginning to end without any control...?
If you allow a program to do the whole process for you and copy a "whole" disc, then you end up with not only the FBI warning at the beginning but all the extras. Shrinking all of this down certainly degrades the whole disc's quality. That's why I use DVDDecryptor to first see what size I'm working with and then choose what I want from there. Of course if the size of the whole disc is close to or just above the 4.5Gig threshold, I'll most likely go for the whole disc...but if the disc is like 8Gigs...it's not worth it to try for all or most...best is to go with just the movie (main language audio) and decide on what if any subtitles.
