1600x1200 external monitor DVI versus VGA
1600x1200 external monitor DVI versus VGA
I just got a pair of 20 inch LCD monitors (Dell 2007FP), and ran into a problem when I changed my resolution to 1600x1200. I'm using the IBM mini-dock, which has both DVI and VGA outputs. I can't increase the resolution above 1280x1024 using the DVI output.
My only choice was to use the VGA output at 1600x1200. BUT the text is too blurry for me to read comfortably.
I used a desktop machine to hook up the other 20 inch monitor. The DVI output on that machine (with 1600x1200) looks much better than the VGA output on my T41.
I tried swapping the monitors back and forth between the two machines, but this made no difference. Maybe there is something wrong with the DVI output on the mini-dock?!
Is there something else I need to do to get 1600x1200 to work with the DVI output?

similar problem
don't know if rgrosz ever got his problem sorted.
But i have a simlar one. I have the IBM port replicator and bought a DVI-HDMI converter for my plasma. But i can't seem to run a clear picture at the 1024 resolution the plasma supports.
However, with a VDU cable it's spot on. Any ideas why?
thanks

I checked, and I have the latest video driver installed (8.133.2-050525a-024243C).
One thing I forgot to mention is that the T41 doesn't "know" what monitor is attached. I couldn't get it to recognize the new Dell monitor until I ran Windows Update, and had it install the driver for me.
When I look at Display properties, it shows four items:
Default monitor (selected)
Generic Television
Dell 2007P (Analog)
IBM ThinPad 1400x1050 LCD panel
When I used the DVI interface, the only thing different was that the new moitor showed up as Dell 2007P (Digital). It was not the monitor "selected".

I think I found the source of my problem. It appears that the T42 video card has died. I took some photos of the screen display here:
http://www.softwarepolish.net/T42/index.html
The 4 photos in the top row show the laptop display. The first two on the bottom row show how it looks on the external monitor.
The last two photos show how I am use Windows XP Remote Desktop to access my T42 from another PC. Thank goodness for that - I was beginning to totally freak out.
Once I get everything I need off the laptop, I will send it in for repair.

Have you tried omega drivers?
I would try it before taking it for a repair.
Make sure to uninstall currently installed ATI driver before installing omega drivers.

A question for those using external monitors with a T42. Are you able to use both monitors at the same time, and have you tried using Media Center 2005 on the secondary monitor?
I'm thinking of whether to use a large LCD-monitor (e.g. Dell 2407FPW) in my bedroom as a TV/movie display, along with MCE2005.

I never figured out how to use two monitors with the ATI Hydravision software. I have been using MaxiVista Pro ($30) to expand my desktop, but that software requires a PC to drive the second monitor.Esben wrote:A question for those using external monitors with a T42. I tried the Omega drivers - made no difference. The "stripes" shown in the pictures above occur shortly after boot-up, long before Windows loads.daeojkim wrote:Have you tried omega drivers?

Thank you for the answer. I had my troubles, when I tried connecting my plasma screen to the ThinkPad in order to show movies. My hope was that I was an isolated case, but it could be a cause, that I haven't installed any of the driver extras, such as Catalyst Control Center or Control Panel extensions.rgrosz wrote:I never figured out how to use two monitors with the ATI Hydravision software.
