DVI-HDMI from Port Replicator

I have been trying to use a DVI to HMDNI cable to my Panasonic HD Plasma but cannot get a clear picture at 1024*768. The funny thing is that the TV also has a VDU connection and this works fine at 1024.

I've bought an expensive (long) DVI to HDMI converter and would prefer to use it. Have you any tips for getting the DVI to work. Do i need to install special drivers?

I have a Thinkpad t42

Also, can anyone confirm whether HD media e.g. High Def WMV will actually appear HD on my TV via a DVI or VDU cable?

Also, anyone know of a way to get Dolby 5.1 from a T42?
