How to find MAC address 2200BG?

#1 Post by jsmit86 » Wed Aug 11, 2004 8:04 pm

The tag on the bottom of my t42 has rubbed off.
How can I find the MAC address of the wireless adapter?

Thanks!

I guess I need to put a replacement label somewhere on the PC.

Yeah, and if things down there are rubbing off quickly then record
your WinXP key somewhere else too.

Or just put a strip of scotch tape over the serial number(s) to protect the ink from rubbing off.

Here's a handy tool for extracting the key from your registry. Of course, if the reason you need it is to reinstall XP after a head crash then this may be too late :)

I wondered about that myself and was hoping someone here might know the answer to that little detail ;)

Even more interesting is that the MSDN key I used to install on my A21p does display correctly using the tool. (That's what I used to check the tool before I posted the link.) But now that you mention it, when I run it against a Netvista that came with XP Pro preinstalled, the key on the sticker doesn't match the key that's reported. I realize that OEM keys are different from retail keys, but why would they cause the tool to malfunction?

They key that shows up in the registry is one that does not require you to activate your copy of windows xp. The one on the bottom of your laptop does ... that sticker is there more to show you that you have purchased a license, and a unique key just happens to be on the sticker.

If you were to try to install a copy of windows with the key that is used on your laptop now, it would fail. You can only install using that key from certain images of the windows xp installation. What that means is you cannot use a retail windows xp cd and that key (which would in theory give you unlimited installs).
