Direct x7or x9?

#1 Post by ParzanM » Wed Jul 12, 2006 1:32 pm

Hi,
I have t42 with ATI 7500 32MB with DX7.

1)should i get DX9? will it cause any problems...any benifits? or should i just stick with DX7

2) is the ati mobility 7500 32mb comparable to the 8500 desktop version?(saw it in a few forums) if not..what is it compareble to in desktop versions?

Thanks
Parzan

PS. is there anyway i can improve gaming performance in Counterstrike and such games? not HL2 or DOOM

Is the GPU in the T4x- series a Dx7 or Dx9 card?

If it's not Dx9, there is no way it can use any Dx9 features--it's a hardware issue.

"Get" DX9 sounds easy, but the Radeon Mobility 7500 is only DX7 compliant, which means that it has no pixel shader compatability, HDR etc. The radeon mob. 9000 offers PS 1.4, and is DX8.1 compliant. Radeon mob. 9600 offers DX9 compatiblity - PS 2.0, HDR. It is more than double the speed in 3d roughly, compared to the 7500.

So 1) Since you need something faster as you say, look out for a motherboard for the T42 with either mob. radeon 9600 or FireGL T2.

So 2) It's very hard to say, since it depends on a lot of tests, but i would rate it somewhat lower performing than the 8500, the radeon mob. 9000 being equal the 8500.

good luck :-)

As far as I have understood the 7500 Mobility can be compared to the Radeon 7200 which is the same as ATI Radeon 64 MB DDR ViVo (clocks on these cards are 183/183 MHz).

thanks for the speedy responses. I cant seem to find DX7 on the microsoft site. Is it ok if i get DX9? Is it backwards compatible? or will it cause some issues in performance?

lol - you should definitely just go ahead and get the latest DX9. It's really much more than just support for features; compatibility, stability, security and speed has been very much improved upon since DX7...

I sooo wish my 9600 had HDR

Yes I think ParzanM is talking about the DirectX software, and just do what lalf says. I suppose the only reason you would want to stick with DX7 is that it uses less hard disk space than DX9 (don't quote me on this fact though.)

As for improving gaming performance, especially on slower hardware, keep the number of running processes low and defrag often; if you want more info check out sites like http://www.tweakguides.com
