an odd RAM upgrade

#1 Post by hmphargh » Thu Aug 12, 2004 2:05 am

I have an odd RAM upgrade question. I have 256MB of RAM at the moment. I would like to upgrade to 1GB, is it possible to install 2X512MB sticks of RAM (removing the 256 currently installed) or is the 256 in there now, in there for good?

There should be two slots available. Just remove the 256 and plug in two 512meg sticks.

It's the X40 that comes with one pre-soldered ram module I believe. Don't think any of the T-series come with soldered ram module.

It rather largely depends on which machine you're talking about - each series has it's particularities...

*edit* - Disregard this, as it will not work for the T42 (however its still a good deal if you need memory for another computer of yours). thanks for the correction rhema83.

And when you do go about buying those 512 sticks, theres a pretty good deal on some from CompUSA at the moment....i think they should work with the T42s http://www.slickdeals.net/#p5063

I think they won't work. Our T42s use 200-pin SODIMMs...

On the T-4X series the second DIMM is hard to get to.

I wouldn't bother.

My guess is that you can't tell the difference between 768K and 1GB - if you do need 1GB - just spend the $300 and get a 1GB DIMM to add.

I'm sorry, but there I must disagree - I found it particularly easy to remove the three screws retaining the keyboard and uncover the 2nd DIMM slot. I had to do this a couple of times having bought a dodgy 512M card (replaced by Bill) but there was certainly no real hassle involved.

This said I do agree with the fact that the difference between 768k and 1Gb are probably difficult to actually quantify in terms of day to day use.

I'm aware that there isnt much of a difference between 768MB and 1GB, im just curious because my school says that 1gb is the required minimum, i was just checking in case i ACTUALLY need 1 gb (seems unlikely however)

those University "minimums" are often set by uninformed administrators who obtain their marketing information from Intel and Microsoft....
