Thinpad T42p MB in a t41 shell: Fan Problems

#1 Post by semaj » Mon Jul 17, 2006 10:01 pm

I recently replaced my non working t41 motherboard and upgraded to a t42p motherboard. Everything seemed to go well except at startup I receive a fan error. The fan starts up I believe but I still get the error. One time it didn’t start up but I believe that was because it was too cool and no need to fan. I turned it off promptly just in case there was a problem. I originally had the short fan and with that I receive no errors. where I use this new fan I purchased off of eBay" > Laptop Parts & Accessories > Other Parts & Accessories"
ThinkPad T40 T41 T42 Fan Long M10 w/Heat sink 13R2657"

I receive an error. Is there a bios setting or is there something deeply wrong with it. I assume I am using the same model long fan that the original donor pc was using.

Can anyone offer some insight before I fry my computer (well I won’t run it until I can find an answer)?

Thanks

1) You should always hear the fan when you first power up the unit. If you are getting a fan error, then the fan is not spinning because it is "frozen" or because it is not plugged in.
2) You should not use the short fan on the T42p motherboard. The heat generated by the ATI video chip on that board requires the long heat sink.

However, there is no necessity to be a fanatic about this stuff. Nothing will "blow up" if you run the machine for a few minutes without a fan or without the long heat sink. The Pentium M processor has internal self-protection from heat levels that would damage it and the ATI chip won't get enough activity in a short time to get it too hot. In other words, you can afford to turn on the machine, look at what is happening, and make a determination of what is actually going on with the fan.

well the pc runs a lot hotter. usually the short fan keeps it at 99-115F with the old board with the short fan. WIth the new board the short board keeps it cooler than 115f(the cpu). This new fan barely runs. i did see the new fan let the cpu temp get up to 65 deg C and te gpu up to 56 deg c. Now when i turn the pc on and it gets a fan error it turns off(only with this new long fan). should the fan be replaced or is there a setting i missed?

Question, with the new fan you are still the same fan error?
And when you start the computer at that exact moment you hear the fan run? At fast speed?

Only the m10 long fan gives me the error. the original motherboard for this laptop was the short fan and it works fine, but it doesnt cool the gpu. The short fan keeps the processor cool. The long fan was quite warm in temperature when i ran it. I think it is the new fan, but i never tried any other fan with this board. I am getting a replacement fan from the guy.

thanks

Can try and ask the seller to replace the M10 fan with another?

cant you just unscrew the actual plastic fan from the copper housing? if im not mistaken, they are the exact same thing just attached to a different sized piece of copper. if i were you i'd take the long fan and unscrew it from its copper heatsink, and replace it with the fan that works.

i thought about that but they are not screwed in but joined togather permanently. Also the long fan is a little more powerful than the short one. good idea though

Were you able to solve this ? The fan housing i think is sealed or welded, i dont see how to remove it in mine either.
