Dont Install SP2

#1 Post by T41mbi » Thu Aug 12, 2004 4:40 pm

I've seen alot of posts about SP2 so I jsut wanna say DONT DOWNLOAD IT for atleast a month it has alot of bugs and is causing alot of compatability issues with 3rd Party software so wait atleast 1 month (ATLEAST) giving microsoft some time to smooth out the rough edges.

SP2 isn't going to change... its out, period. MS isn't going to change anything about it. the only thing that will change is other software vendors releasing patches to make their software compatible, if they haven't done so already.

thanks for the warning, but i've been running it for almost a week with no problems (except for NAV... and symantec released a patch wednesday).

Like what software?

I haven't had any problems...I just downloaded an update for Nero and Symantec AV, other than that, no problems at all.

Anyone else use Cisco VPN Client?

#4 Post by sjhwilkes » Thu Aug 12, 2004 7:27 pm

Anyone dared load it who also uses the Cisco VPN client? I tried with the RC2 a while ago and it broke things big time.

SP2 also works fine here. Not a single problem.

My wife uses the Cisco VPN client to connect to her office from here at home.

Her employer's IT folks have expressly forbidden anyone to upgrade to RC2 after they discovered a lot of problems between it and Cisco.

I guess they fixed the Cisco client problem with the final release. It would seem to be a huge mistake to overlook something like that.

They're one and the same. RC2 is the "Release Candidate 2" version of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). It was an earlier version of the Service Pack 2.

The version you can download now is Windows XP Service Pack 2 (RTM) "Release to manufacturing".

I had a problem making a backup with RRwRR after having installed SP2: a popup window said it will take 145 min- normally ca. 20 min are sufficient. (I was not patient and interrupted the process)

Had anybody similar experience?

See everyone in the thread is saying that they have installed it and are not having any problems that is because it has just been released! Give it a few weeks and you will start to see the holes pop up.

Anyway I am just passing on the message, most security advisories, i.e. SFF, also CNET has conducted a comprehensive review of the update and strongly advises that everyone waits a little while

Anyway thats my advice, take it or leave it

RC2 and SP2 are most definitely *not* one in the same thing. They are different files and different file sizes. RC2 had bugs and lots of us reported those bugs.

So far, for me, two computers (XP Pro, Symantec Client Security 2.0 up-to-date, NAV 2003 up-to-date; BlackICE newest version; VMware newest version; IBM drivers and applications - newest version; MS Office XP Pro - service pack 3 and up-to-date; Netscreen VPN; and other applications) both work very well with Service Pack 2.

In my experience, Service Packs do not change. All that happens is that newer patches are released.

So by all means, wait if you wish to or need to. There is no harm in that. But look to your vendors to get updated applications, because those applications will have to change if they don't work under SP2.

I suppose if enough vendors hassle Microsoft, they could bring out a new service pack, but I have not heard anything like that, so I doubt it.

If you install SP2 and have problems, is it possible to "roll back"?

Installed SP2 RTM, no problems with firewall, AV, or any other security settings/apps I had previously installed.
