My new T-43 UPDATE

Hey everyone, its a pleasure to be here. Im coming from a Gateway M305CRV that my father bought for me about 2 years ago. I got it for school, however the fan is so loud I can hear it over my AC and whatever mp3 I am playing at the time! It runs for the entire time the computer is on, very annoying. So yesterday I ordered this T-43 from Newegg.com.

$1,100 seemd like a very good price from what I have seen online. My friend said he would not pay over $700 for it, because he said it was "2 year old technology." He contiuned to harass me thereafter. Gotta love the kid tho, makes me laugh. What do you all think of this buy? I have been reading this forum for a day or so now, and have done many searches. Lots of helpful info, esp the fan software fix. I read that these notebooks run cool and quiet, exactly what I want for the classroom. Thanks for your opinons. ~ Peter

Lenovo ThinkPad T60 Notebook - Intel Centrino Duo Core Duo 1.83GHz - 14.1" SXGA+ - 512MB DDR2 SDRAM - 80GB - DVD-Writer - 56Kbps - Gigabit Ethernet , Fingerprint thing, Wi-Fi , Bluetooth - Windows XP Professional - Black - 2623D6U. Plus it has a 3 year warrenty which is great. The main reason I got it was for the SXGA screen, I love working with high resolutions. Paid 1,400 for this machine. (thanks dad!) Should be here early next week. Needless to say my friend is ver fond of my new notebook. Thanks all.

You did well. Your friend is technically correct, but wrong on the big picture. It's like knowing what time the bus arrives, but not knowing where it is going. Enjoy your new Thinkpad.

Its a pretty good deal. Cosmetically IMO T40 series even look better than the T60s. I bougth two of those.

Tell your friend to stuff it.
the Dual Core laptops have just come out this year, and so far im not impressed. The T60 is not much faster (if any) than the T43.
I have a T43 again (dumped my Tablet) and i am very happy with it. If you use it for everything except gaming then it is perfect. I run a SQL server a Visual Studio on mine now and it is not slow at all and in some cases as fast or faster then my P4 3.4 desktop.

you will love it.

Thanks for the replys. I will use mainly MS word/Office 03, as well as mp3 playback, I just have'nt figured if I should use Winamp classic or iTunes. Im going for minimal sys resources. AIM 5.9.3681 with ad hack too

Congradulations. You will love your machine.

I used to own a T43. It is a wonderful machine. I use WinAMP classic. Mainly because it supports so many formats. iTunes may be fine but you are limited Apple formats.

Outdated or not might well depend on the programs you run. For web surfing, email, office work and music/video (non H264) playback, even a T40 can handle them well.

Regarding the outdated issue: I find myself using "horribly outdated" Thinkpads (A T23 and an X24) all the time, and to my great pleasure they work very efficiently and can perform any tasks I need them to do. The only task where more power is welcome is video encoding, but that's to be expected.

Don't be suckered up into believing that 2 year old technology is inadequate. Hardware (and software) manufacturers make most of their revenue off of suckers like your friend who must ride the envelope of technological advancement at all costs. Think about this: 2 years ago, your T43 was bleeding edge. Has any revolutionary software or hardware peripheral come out since then that allows you to do tasks someone couldn't do 2 years ago and has rendered your computer obsolete. I DON'T think so. The real trick is this: Don't try to run Photoshop CS2 on a Thinkpad T23. Instead, run Photoshop 7. You can do just as much with Photoshop 7, and you'll be happier.

Besides, there is an intrinsic value to thinkpads that overrides the mere technological value of its electronic components. It's just like a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda. OK, maybe the wrong example, since a Thinkpad is more classy than your average Hemi monster. But you get the idea.

I bought a T42 by november last year, It has a centrino 1.7ghz Dothan architecture, until now this extraordinary piece of the best hardware ever produced hasn't failed ... it is a trustful machine. I work in the construction area, and use it to do the planning, controling and reporting of projects, massive data management applications, even autocad work smoothly without a fail...

I don't need to update for the time being and am very happy and proud of my (vintage...

) T42, so don't listen to those snobish who think that two year old technology is outmoded by today standars, the standars come from your own needs...

And welcome to the Thinkpad family T43 is a very nice machine too and very cutting edge...

Congrats on your new T43 Thinkpad.

I have had mine for quite awhile now and have yet to have one crash or BSOD. Which is more than I can say for the non-Thinkpad PC laptops. Through careful observation, I have noticed that there is a roughly 35% chance that, when somebody brings in a Dell to make a presentation on, it generally crashes. Also, believe it or not, I have *never* gotten a FireWire bridge to work on any of the non-Thinkpad laptops that I have owned. Neither the HPs nor the Dells could actually use their FireWire port...which I found kind of bizzare.

Point out to your friend that wasting money on the latest product to have its design controlled more by shoving as many features in as possible rather than an actual R&D team is not all that great. The initial cost of a Thinkpad may be higher, but it will eventually last longer and stay more robust than its counterparts on the market.

I'd rather have two year old technology in a first rate chassis than current technology in a thrid rate chassis. Just something to think about.

Me too... it's satisfying to know that the guys at Lenovo do think the same, and are providing excellent materials and rougedness in their top notch models. At last somebody undertood that we deserve to enjoy our machines for two or three years...
