T40 video issues

#1 Post by Eric Giles » Tue Aug 01, 2006 10:42 am

Did a search on this but did not find anything closely related...

Last night while using the unit, I suddenly got a blue screen. It said that one of the ATI driver files was the problem and that it was doing a physical dump of memory then rebooted.

The computer then restarts, and I have video right up until the point where I imagine the video driver 'engages' and the Windows XP login screen appears, but then the lcd goes totally black-no backlight or anything-and the computer restarts again.

I can get into safe mode, and I uninstalled all of the ATI drivers. I can reboot into Windows XP, but of course running on the VGA driver. I then reinstalled the video driver again from the Drivers folder on the hard drive. Upon reboot, the same thing happens again-blue screen referencing an ATI driver file, then a sudden reboot with the entire process repeating itself. Pressing Fn-F7 does not help.

I figured reinstalling the video driver would solve it, but to no avail. I do a good bit of computer repair work, and issues where the video fails upon loading the driver generally indicate a hardware fault with the video system.

Has anyone else experience this or have any tips on what to try next?

Thanks!

Just for future reference-I changed the driver for the AGP-CPU interface from the Intel driver to PCI to PCI interface and the video is once again working properly. I found this fix from doing a Google search.

Not sure why this happened, but for now it is fixed.

My old T40 unit had problems with video related BSODs, to the point where the system was going blue every 10 minutes. I had to get the system board replaced :(
