Security chip logins are painfully slow
I was just wondering if anyone knew how to speed up the process of security chip validation for logins, as it is right now it seems to take up to a good 45 seconds to just get authenticated. This is anoying for making the laptop useful in quick on/off situations and feels unneccessary. In the meantime I've turned it off.
So is there any way to get the security chip to validate logins to windows faster? Is my chip just slow, or is this normal?
Thank you.

I`d love to verify your findings.
I know I can enable the security chip in the bios, but how do I enable windows to use it for logins? I`d love to try that.
if you tell me how I can enable that, then I`d love to test how long it takes for me.

I think that should be the link to the software needed.
I've got version 6 , maybe I should try version 7 in a bit, prehaps they speeded things up

CSS7 seems even slower!
Password manager is very slow to bring up the fingerprint picture in order to swipe and hence gain access to a protected item.
Logging on, from scratch, seems to take much longer -and at least one other person noticed it too. (See 'New CSS 7 (Client Security Solution) Posted July 19, 2006' topic in 'thinkpads.com Support Community Forum Index -> Windows OS')

That IS slow! Perhaps you have something else slowing things up. E.g. A problem with Wireless access or with Access Connections; these two are well discussed candidates for very slow log in times. (I would recommend a search through the various topics here before you start removing anything.)testthings wrote:It takes 165 seconds for CSS 7.0 to "check the status of the embedded security chip"!!It's ridiculous. I'm going to remove it.

I was having major delay issues with CSS6; with CSS7 they're virtually gone. I was very happy when I noticed this.
Did you uninstall CSS6 before installing CSS7? Maybe try uninstalling, restarting, going into BIOS, turning security chip off, restarting again, and installing CSS7 fresh? (I assume installing CSS7 will turn the chip back on.) I know it sounds silly but you never know.
good luck.

I've found what the problem is.Nick Y wrote:That IS slow! Perhaps you have something else slowing things up. E.g. It's the two virtual adapters of Vmware. Since I use bridging mode only, I disable both adapters and stop DHCP/NAT service. CSS 7.0 works fine now.

I had recently uninstalled CSS (older version) and reinstalled CSS7.0. My authentication time using fingerprint reader was horrid after css7.0, well over 20 seconds at times, and most often it would not remove/change the login screen to indicate that the fingerprint was read correctly until after 3-7 seconds.
FIX: I was able to get rid of most of this lag by doing the following:
1. DEACTIVATE the embedded security chip. When prompted, reboot for changes to take effect.
2. After reboot and login (via username/password), I was prompted by popup wizard asking if I wanted to ACTIVATE the embedded security chip. I did so (and I think obligatory reboot for settings to take effect), and from that point on my fingerprint authentication has been working fine. I also have password manager running concurrently and I'm not seeing any problems there either.
I'm not sure why that worked, I was just happy to get authentication using the fingerprint reader back to zippy speed. (I use a thinkpad x41t tablet, so fingerprint reader is kinda necessary to log in without penning in password or folding back the lid to get to the keyboard).
Anyhow, thought I'd just post this in case it is of help to others.
