Migrating from a T43 to a T42. Best way? How?

#1 Post by crashnburn » Thu Aug 03, 2006 9:51 am

I had recently been provided with a T43 from the company but it had low resolution screen - 1024x768 so I asked the IT support for a high res laptop and they are willing to send me a T42 with SXGA+ (1400x1050).

Now what would be the easiest, fastest, most convenient way of transferring / migrating?

Would one of the following ways work?

1) Swap the HDD from one to the other. I am guessing on starting up it would need to install some drivers.

2) Using partition magic to do an image swap and the drivers.

//

I am sure that I could back up stuff etc.. and do a similar swap but I am thinking the above would be the most seamless.

Anyone do something similar between different T series laptops.

I did a straight swap from a T40 to T42 without any problems. Windows picked up the new system.

Just swap the HDs, then run the Software Installer to ensure everything is up to date for the T42.

Great thanks for the advise.

PS: When you say "Software Installer" what are you talking about?

“Software Installer” is a software what can update the drivers of the laptop automatically.

whoa! when did they pull Software Installer? This must have happened recently. I wonder what new and exciting problems System Update will bring ;-)

It may well be a bit more complicated than that. The T42 uses an Intel Ethernet port/driver, while the T43 uses a Braodcom Ethernet port/driver, so at the very least you will need to ensure that you have the appropriate network driver for the T42 on hand to get to a point where you have adequate network connectivity to be able to run Software Installer.

Depending on the exact OS image that is on your T43 (especially if its a corporate SOE) you may also need to have some other drivers which are specific to the pre-T43 models handy to get a workable boot from a T43 disk/image placed into a T42.

Cheers,

Bill

Is it better to do a HDD swap or a PQMagic /Ghost image copy and then run stuff.

I dont know if the IT support guys will have an issue if I swap HDDs.

The soft ThinkVantage System Migration Assistant v5.1 may help.
This is the introduction of it:
------------------
ThinkVantage System Migration Assistant is a systems manageability tool that runs on your Lenovo notebook and desktop computers. System Migration Assistant reduces the time and effort needed to migrate end users to a new system by capturing settings and data files from a current PC so that they may be applied onto a new machine. As part of the ThinkVantage Technology family of solutions, SMA helps provide a cost-effective migration process when users are moving to a new Microsoft Windows operating system.

I am thinking of simply doing a HDD swap etc.

Now, what would be better here.. Software Installer or System Update.

I noticed this strong BIAS against System Update in couple of threads. Is System Update stable / dependable now?

Which version is usable / stable for both the apps?

Has anyone tried this? T40-T42 uses intels 855 chipset. The T43 however uses intels 915 chipset. I tried swaping a T43 disk to a T42 and a T40 a couple of times without success. It was solved through a resque installation of windows. You must have an OEM windows cd though.

This did not work?
Just swap the HDs, then run the Software Installer to ensure everything is up to date for the T42.

James suggested that it was possible here.

I would use the ThinkVantage Migration assistant myself. I'm not sure the HD swap will work either as the chipsets are different.

I did a system compare and downloaded the drivers / devices that are different. I downloaded the CHIPSET DRIVERS AS WELL.

I am wondering if I should install that before the swap so that the drivers are already there for detection or after the swap.

1. Before: Ready for chipset detect all new stuff via PnP. But, might cause a problem even just trying to install it before swap.

2. After: Most windows instances should be able to bootup in a decent manner / or worse case safe mode for allow a post swap install.

Any thoughts?

working with desktop motherboards a way to make it work is to uninstall all chipset drivers on the old mobo before moving the drive/system to the new. That way new chipset installs instead of just loading old drivers and hang. Never tried it on a laptop though.

Never a good idea to go from a T43 back to a T42 due to all the hardware changes between the two. If that was me, I'd reload the box with the new T42 platform underneath it. I can't begin to tell you how many customers I see with strange problems like hanging, blue screens, mising devices and error codes in XP because they didnt' take the time to reimage when doing a major platform change.

I am guessing I'll try it both ways and see which works better.
