T41 - ThinkVantage System Update Error

#1 Post by wwaller » Sat Aug 05, 2006 3:19 pm

I recently reimaged my T41 with the factory image, and all worked well. I ran the System Update, and downloaded a new version of the bios. I installed the typical software like Office 2003 and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate v10. Then I ran CCleaner, which removes old/temp files to clean up the hard drive. Now, when I run the System Update it gets to 8% and an error is displayed: A error occurred while gathering user information

I have tried uninstalling System Update and reinstalling, but I still get the same error.

Has anyone run into this before? I have searched, but can't find any information. Thanks in advance for your help!

~Bill

I posted a slightly similar occurence myself earlier this evening. See 'System Update 2 failure' in Thinkpad - General HARDWARE/SOFTWARE questions. (Hence it is not just you -or me, for that matter.)

Do you have IE 7 beta installed? I was able to get pass that error after uninstalling IE 7 beta (though now it says "Error 42 received from the Package Index Server. Please contact the Support Center")

Yes, I have IE 7 Beta 3 installed. I will try uninstalling it to see where I get. Thanks!

Hi, Well I have the same nasty error from SU2: "An Error Occurred while gathering ..." at about 8% completion. I do have IE7RC1 installed. A month ago the SU went flawlessly. Hmmm, good ole Microsoft might be messing things up again! -Dennis

IE 7 Beta/RC1 Still causing a problem

#6 Post by wwaller » Wed Sep 13, 2006 7:25 pm

If you uninstall IE 7 Beta/RC1 you will be able to run the System Update without issue. I thought they might fix this in IE 7 RC1, but I am obviously optimistic. I am not sure if the problem is with Microsoft or IBM, but this is a bug that needs to be fixed!

IE7RC1 blues

#7 Post by strev » Wed Sep 13, 2006 8:45 pm

Ugh now if I could only find out HOW to uninstall IE7RC1. Unlike the "betas" before this version, it does not seem to show up in Add/Remove Programs list -- neither as an application or as an "update" to Windows. At least none o fhe Windows Updates have a name which implies they are IE7 components. Ugh. I hope somebody can tell me how to uninstall this sucker. What a piece of trash! VIVE FIREFOX!

It sure seems like IE7 is causing a lot of trouble! It is also conflicting with my FAVORITE application "X1" for which there is also currently no fix.

IE 7 RC1 Uninstall Information

#8 Post by wwaller » Fri Sep 15, 2006 8:50 pm

Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7 RC1

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 RC1 and restore Internet Explorer 6 when using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Add or Remove Programs.
Scroll down to Windows Internet Explorer 7, click it, and then click Change/Remove.
If you cannot find Windows Internet Explorer 7 in Add or Remove Programs, click Start, click Run, type
%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note: %windir% is the location of your Windows directory, which can usually be found at C:\Windows. To do this, you need to have "view hidden folders" enabled.
