T4X hard drive caddy part #?

#1 Post by RaysMD » Sat Aug 14, 2004 10:19 pm

I'm looking for the part number to the hard drive caddy (tray) for the Thinkpad T40 series. I bought one of those open bay models and need this part to install the hard drive. anyone know what it is?

eBay has a few of them, but I want the exact one.

Thanks,
rays

If you're referring to the Ultrabay Slim HDD caddy, FRU#62P4554 is what the IBM site lists (mine says FRU#62P4553, but IBM occasionally changes or updates their part numbers). If you're referring to the hard drive cover for the internal HDD, FRU#13N5530. There is also the aluminum shield that covers the bottom of the internal hard drive, but it is part of a miscellaneous parts pack, I believe. I haven't been able to find a part number for only the hard drive shield.

I guess I'll have to resort to eBay.

Bill doesn't list the aluminum shield for the internal drives for T Series ThinkPads... but I'm going to email him and ask him, since I could use 2 or three.

When I recently received my T42 23733VU, I went to the IBM site and got a list of the FRU's used for my machine (Samsung screen, Thai keyboard, Sony battery!). It also listed the following:

Mfg. part FRU#
13N6798 13N6805 80GB HARD DRIVE TRAY ASSEMBLY FRU
13N6804 13N6805 80GB HARD DRIVE TRAY ASSEMBLY FRU

You might want to search on those numbers at the IBM site and see if it helps.

13N6805

That's the part # for the hard drive itself.

Thanks anyway

I also bought two of those open bay models. When I got them, I called IBM and complained the missing parts. I filed a complaint and after a while a PR person called me and asked me to send the machines back, order new ones (any model), call back with an order number and IBM would give me $500 back for each machine. I just checked my AMEX balance and there was $1050 credited from IBM :D This was in top of all other discounts I was able to squeeze, ie MasterCard discount, free shipping etc. Total discount was 35% :)

RaysMD:

I assume you went to the IBM site and searched on 13N6805. I assume you saw the one document that referenced the number: "System FRU parts list - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p." I assume you saw the exploded parts with all the parts numbered. It shows the rail guide to the hard disk labeled as Index #6 and the HDD cover labled Index #C. If you go down to the part section of the table below identifying the parts, you will see #6 is labled "Cover - HDD." The FRU# is there. If you go to the top of the index and look for part #C, you'll see a link taking you to the page with that FRU. It appears that they got the Index #s swapped for the HDD rail guide and the cover, but it's all there. It appears the rail guide is part of a package containing several pieces.

FYI: The hard drive will mount fine without the shield. You just need two flat-head screws to fit the cover over.

I believe that the open-bay units don't come with the shield because IBM laptop hard drives all come pre-equipped with the shield.

so if I order an open bay model AND a HDD at the same time from IBM, would the HDD come with the caddy?
