Bluetooth mouse on T42 without the dongle in use.

Any experiences in fitting a BT mouse into use on a T42 with BT and without using any dongle.

Which brands do you use?

I use a Logitech V270 BT mouse when travelling, and a Microsoft Intellimouse for BT in the office, with a T43. They both work fine once paired with the ThinkPad.

Bill what are the available options for a T42 that does not have bluetooth. Cheap USB dongles are available but they stick out. I was able to talk to a IBM tech after a long wait time and we discussed this issue for at least one hour. He made me download Bluetooth software, update from Microsoft site, endless configuration details, upgrade details. In the end he said that Bluetooth module is not inside my machine therefore no Bluetooth software will work.

My question is: Can I purchase the bluetooth module that goes inside a default-bluetooth-fitted T42 and may be a tools kit and open up my machine and fit the hardware myself?

As long as you have the BT antenna inside the T42 (which I think is a standard part of the T42 build), it is reasonably straight forward to fit a Bluetooth+analog modem module. You will need to disassemble the T42 to a certain extent, and there are instructions for doing that on the IBM/Levono support web site.

I haven't needed to do this myself, however, there are messages in this forum from others who had done it so, a few minutes with the search capability of ThinkPads.com site should turn up references on the specific BT module you need and the process for installing it.

Cheers,

Bill

Bill,

Very helpful reply. Before I go hunting for the module part number and ordering information etc, I'm thinking how to make sure 2374-K5U has an antenna in it. If someone confirms all T42's have antennas in them, my question's answered already.

All machines do not have Bluetooth antennas. Remove the keyboard and look under the top left part of the keyboard bezel to see how many wires come out from under the left hinge. The grey and black wires are the 802.11x antennas and the white wire -- if it is there -- is for Bluetooth.

If the white wire is not there, then you can add the BT antenna to the inside left side of the LCD casing by disassembling the LCD cover. You asked if you need a tool kit: All you need is the correct size Phillips screwdriver.

Any of you guys have had a BT keyboard in action. Was it using MS BT SW or IBMs own?

I have an MS "Elite for Bluetooth" keyboard which I use very occassionally with my T43. I'm using the IBM/Widcom Bluetooth stack in the T43 and the basic keyboard functions work fine. I have no recollection whether any of the "extra" buttons work on the MS work properly as I don't use them etc.

Cheers,

Bill

I have that white wire. But, its attached to a card over there. How do I get it out?

If you don't have a bluetooth card then it wont be attached to the CDC card (that is the card you will be replacing with a bluetooth/mobem combo card) but there is a pocket underneath the card where it is inserted into for neatness.

FWIW: I've used the Microsoft bluetooth desktop and a Logitech MX900 with both the Microsoft and Widdcomm stacks/software on a T42 and a T43 and everything seems to work properly (except an issue if using remote desktop on the T43 with Widdcomm stack but the older version of the driver resolves it)
