I agree. The specs on the 100Gb 7200rpm hitachi are all around better. The shock resistance, both operating and non operating, were key considerations in my decision to go with Hitachi. The hitachi drives also have a proven method of getting around the 2010 error as well but I don't know for sure if the Seagates even generates the error.

Definitive in what sense?

I have run across the latest 160GB from Seagate and wasn't all that thrilled considering it did make more noise than a comparable Hitachi (which and seemed faster and quieter in my system) and appeared to be slightly slower than the Hitachi for the same level of fragmentation.

Right now, you are going to end up paying alot more for no real improvement except jamming in more HDD capacity. As that review says, I would wait until it comes down to either MSRP at the *least* or well below it. In this case, it is probably overkill for what is required. :)

The price has come down from MSRP, the review was written quite a while ago. More important are the benchmarks of almost all other 2.5" PATA drives in that review. There is also a 2.5" roundup before that which discusses the same results minus the 160GB if you want color commentary on it.

The 7K100 is a great drive for a great price, but Seagate has it beat on noise & warranty length.

I would still go with the 7K100 as it is pretty much tried and proven and follows on to one of the most popular (for a reason) HDD put into most laptops. The three that I have seen of those 160GBs were, for whatever reason, significantly noisier than a 7K100 with a touch more vibration and clicking; around the level of fan noise, which I found very suprising especially compared to another Seagate which was quieter. Warranty is, however, one of Seagate's strongpoints when it comes to that; although I *do* have several IBM/Hitachi HDDs that are now approaching 7 years of age and they show little to no sign of giving up anytime in the near future and they did outlast shoddier ones from the likes of Maxtor (ugh). :)

A lot of people talk about Seagate's warranty; I was also a huge backer, until I got my 7200.10 DOA. So I RMA'd it, and spend about 1 month back and forth with Seagate. The replacement was OOS for about 2-3 weeks.

While eventually they did get it to me, it did take a while. For their part, though, they upgraded my DOA 300GB drive with a 400GB instead.

I like the Seagate better than the Hitachi ones for first I have owned 6 Seagate HDD for desktop machines and 3 Hitachis. After 2+ years of use the Hitachis got more noisy and one even failed. The Seagates are always quiet even after many years of use. And with the warranty thats an big plus.
There is an reason why Seagate is the biggest HDD maker in the world , there products are the best.

These are my opinions and are too be taken as such......

(My dream HDD is the 160GB Seagate Momentus, ahh plenty of storage and the fastest 5400RPM drive out there)

I generally agree, but Seagate is the biggest HDD maker because they bought more of the larger HDD makers than their competition. It's not about quality.

Personally, I like the Seagate drives way better. For me, they have provided much more tolerable noise levels, compared to the Hitatchi-drives I've tried...

Don't get me started with Maxtor, out of what a total of 4 HDDs I've had. Two have failed, both maxtor Diamond Plus 9 2MB Caches.

Stay away. Seagate. Hitachi. Not much difference both pretty good quality.

They are compatible and you should run into *no* error. I can't see any logical reason why you would. :)

I have actually been thinking about this as well since in the past month I have gone through three hard drives via warranty.

All Travelstar 60 7200rpm from my T42p.

Which of the 7200rpm drive do you guys think has the lowest power consumption? The link in the report seems to suggest Seagate.

I am really itching on getting rid of the extended battery because I walk around my clients all day with my laptop, so if another lower power consuming drive is there, it would be great.

There are various external 2.5" HDD enclosures that you can get; once you put in the HDD and attach the USB cable, you are ready to go. :)

Lenovo has updated the hard disk firmware update utility to include the Hitachi 7K100 series. So there should no longer be a need for the use of Messar hacks, though I have not tried it out myself.

I've had great success with IBM/Hitachi drives. Every custom build I've made is using IBM/Hitachi drives, and none have failed, and each has performed excellent. The Thinkpad has a 7K100, which is fast and larger than the org. drive, and the HTPC runs a T7K500 320 GB, which works great.
