OpenGL problems on T21

#1 Post by MarkB » Mon Aug 16, 2004 10:01 am

Hey guys,

I just purchased a T21. It is an amazing machine.

Anyway, I did a clean install on the laptop right after I received the laptop. I am running XP Pro with SP2. I loaded the latest drivers from IBM's website for my unit. I have the S3 Save IX 8MB card in my unit (like most T20s T21s, and T22s). IBM' site says that the new drivers are OpenGL compatible.

The driver version as reported in my device manager says 6.13.10.7050 which I assume is the latest driver. I have reloaded/wiped clean these drivers several time.

I have attempted to run Half Life/Counterstrike several times. It runs fine in D3D, but freezes after about ten seconds with OpenGL. I can also run Q3 but without GL extensions. It freezes with GL extensions enabled.

I am looking for possible solutions (other drivers? a patch?) for this issue.

Thanks guys!

I was a T21 owner till recently and I had similar problems with win2000 drivers on halflife opengl mode.
One thing which can improve the stability is to disable fast write and maybe sideband adressing . To do this download "powerstrip" (an half free soft) and go to options then adapters informations and uncheck the corresponding options, and first of all the readonly one!.
Nevertheless I was experimenting some freeze with this setting sometimes... The opengl is not perfect with this card on windows...

OL,

Thanks for the advice. I loaded powerstrip and disabled side banding. Fast writes were "NA" and I was not able to manipulate that setting. Anyway, I am still not able to run Counter Strike on OpenGL.

I guess these old S3 did not have good drivers for OpenGL or something.

Thanks again, and if anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know.

If I correctly remember opengl works for halflife-blue shift addon in 800x600 but it froze in 1024x768. It was on win2000 nevertheless.

Well I know this doesnt exactly answer your question but I installed an ATI 9200 in my t22's docking station and can play just about anything. Though not a portable solution, it works nicely when docked thus adding to the convenience of kinda having both worlds...almost.

PK,

Thanks for the post. I was not aware that one could hook up a video card on the docking station. I may have to look in to that.
