T43: HITACHI 7K100 not even being detected. No 2010 error.

The model is the HITACHI Travelstar 7K100 HTS721010G9AT00 (0A25015) 100GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

I am not even getting the 2010. When I put the drive in it makes these loud clicking sounds. The light under the lcd that is supposed to flash when the hard drive is accessed just stays on which leads me to think it is consistently accessing the drive for some reason.

I have no clue what to do. I have put the hard drive in a usb encloser and it works fine. I tried the IBM's firmware upgrade ISO but it just freezes when trying to load the drive. I thought it might be the ISO so I tried using it with another drive and it was able to load but I didn't try to uprgrade the firmware of that other drive because I didn't want to screw it up.

I am planing on updating the BIOS to see if that will fix anything but if that doesn't work my last resort is to try messar's fireware updating technique. Although I am not hopeful that will work because I am not even getting a 2010 error.

If you do not have the drive in the proper caddy, it may not be seating properly aganist the drive connection bus. Try inserting the drive while the laptop is upside down as it may help seat it better.

Do a search on this forum for the same problem as you will see some of the threads with the same answer.

I have it in the caddy that came with the computer. It seems to be seating okay although I don't know how to exactly check that. When I put it in I feel the pins slide into the drive connection bus and when I pull it out I don't see bent pins.

I tried searching for the problem but didn't find a whole lot. Could you tell me what phrases you used to find these threads? Searching for "seating" didn't find me much.

I should say that I also tried the Hard Drive firmware upgrade with the hard disk in a usb drive enclosure. I took out the internal disk becaues it wouldn't boot with two drives attached. Then when I booted it with just the usb drive attached it froze in the same place.

That's weird.

I bought a E7K100 60GB HDD 7200rpm for about 77 USD in a sealed bag and it worked right away in my T42P.

However, I connected a old 4200rpm 40GB disk and happened the same problem. Guess it gotta be a firmware issue on your hard disk, if your thinkpad do not recognize it return it

Return it for a plain vanilla 7K100!

Search the Forum for E7K100 for the reasons why.
